Caring for a loved one who is experiencing disordered eating or an eating disorder can feel isolating and impact your own mental health and well-being.

It is important to acknowledge and honour these difficult emotions while focusing on the things you can do to prioritize your own needs.

Here are some tips on taking care of yourself, while caring for your loved one.

Diet culture has a way of making us believe that health looks the same for everyone, and that only thin bodies are worthy or healthy. It forces us to tie our self-worth to our body size. It also promotes unrealistic standards and harmful behaviors that can have a negative impact on our physical and psychological well-being.

But the truth is, health is personal and unique to each individual and isn’t about fitting a certain ideal.

It is about accepting and nurturing our bodies as they are, in all diverse forms, and caring for ourselves in ways that feel right for us.

June is Pride Month and a time to celebrate the accomplishments and challenges that individuals in the 2SLGBTQ+ community face, particularly when accessing health care.

Stigma, discrimination, trauma, and lack of access to gender affirming care can create barriers to treatment.

Many individuals may not see themselves represented in recovery or lack support from family and friends.

They may have also experienced past discrimination or negative experiences within a healthcare setting.

Inclusive care for all individuals experiencing eating disorders or disordered eating is critical.
