A trip is synonymous with pleasure but also with stress because you get out of your routine. These are already factors that tend to increase the risk of exacerbating the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

We understand that it can be tempting to make exceptions when traveling, but it’s strongly recommended that you continue to avoid foods or drinks that you know you do not tolerate well.

Take the time to consult a travel guide to find out about the eating habits of the country you’re visiting, as well as the type of food that is most often offered. This will allow you to better anticipate your food choices, and to also determine in advance the local foods that would be most likely to aggravate your symptoms.

Another good idea is to book a room with a kitchenette at the beginning of your stay, allowing you to cook with safe ingredients.

Consult a doctor before you go

If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), consult your doctor so that you can receive treatment adapted to your needs. It's good to know that your doctor can prescribe prescription-only medications that are indicated to relieve symptoms.

In addition to your treatment, you can add a small emergency bag that can contain, among other things, a change of clothes or just underwear, wipes, and toilet paper.

You might think it’s better to wait and see if some of your symptoms clear up, but it’s important to know when you may need to speak to a doctor as soon as you can.

Most people can be easily diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) based on their symptoms, but not everyone may know when they need to go in to see a doctor.

You should go for a check-up if you have any of the following:
• Unexplained weight loss
• Blood in the f***s
• Persistent abdominal pain that is not easily relieved by passing gas/stool
• Any major symptom that interferes with daily activities

It is better to be safe than sorry, so make sure you check in with your doctor if you experience any of those symptoms!

- Choose a protein-based bar.
- A good tip: Be sure to read the labels carefully to avoid snacks that contain high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners, as these ingredients can cause significant diarrhea.

Beverages:
- Drink water on a regular basis to stay hydrated.

Meal ideas to help soothe IBS-D

Here are some meal ideas for those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

For breakfast
- Avoid fried foods: Sausages, bacon or ham are not recommended as a source of protein for breakfast.
- Instead, try peanut butter on a whole grain bagel or slice of toast.
- Egg whites, a bowl of oatmeal with no sugar or artificial sweeteners, or cereal bars are also good choices.

For lunch
- Choose grilled fish or chicken with a baked sweet potato

For dinner
- Make a spinach salad with lean protein such as grilled chicken
