Physiotherapists are direct-access practitioners, meaning patients can visit physiotherapists directly (self-referral) without waiting for a physician referral. Physiotherapy self-referral benefits both patients and the health-care system!

Patient benefits include:

- Timely access to care can lead to faster diagnosis and treatment
- Improved health outcomes since early intervention and treatment can result in better outcomes, especially for conditions that require immediate attention
- Better patient satisfaction
- Reduced time loss for additional appointments
- Reduced volume of referrals to specialists
- Reduced health care cost overall

Golf is a great way to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and get moving, all while having fun on the course. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just out for a social round, a few simple habits can help you feel your best throughout the game.
Consider arriving a few minutes early to give yourself time for a light warm-up, stay hydrated (especially on those hot days!), and be sure your clubs suit your body and skill level. Don’t forget to take breaks as needed, pacing yourself helps you enjoy the round from the first tee to the final putt.

Meet NSPA member Lauren Edwards.

Lauren has been a physiotherapist for more than a decade and has had the privilege of enjoying many roles that working as a physiotherapist offers.

Lauren started using clinical hands-on skills working in private practice, and then moved to acute care at the IWK and with Nova Scotia Health (NSH). However, for the past several years, she has been in leadership positions with NSH, currently working as a Professional Practice Leader. While she no longer sees patients, she still uses her physiotherapy skills daily. "Physiotherapists are trained to have strong critical reasoning skills and these come in handy on a daily basis in my job. We also tend to have great 'soft skills' that help us to quickly build and maintain rapport, which helps me as I navigate new relationships within my organization. My current role is mostly consultation based, and just like working with a patient, I need to assess the consult, get to the root cause, determine appropriate interventions, and evaluate the results - it's all transferable skills".

There are numerous “non-clinical” positions in our healthcare system where physiotherapists serve and provide insight, policy direction, management of clinicians and departments and more.

July 7th is National Injury Prevention Day!

Here in Nova Scotia, physiotherapists play a vital role in keeping our communities safe, active, and doing what they love — from the trails of Cape Breton to the streets of Halifax.

From teaching safe movement to improving strength, balance, and body mechanics, physiotherapists don’t just help after injury, they help you avoid it in the first place. Physiotherapists help Nova Scotians of all ages move well and live well.

June is Pride Month — NSPA proudly stands with 2S/LGBTQ+ communities in Nova Scotia and within the physiotherapy profession. Pride is more than a celebration of love and identity — it’s a meaningful reminder of the ongoing journey toward equity and inclusion in every space, including healthcare.

We recognize the importance of creating environments where all individuals feel respected, affirmed, and safe — not just during Pride Month, but year-round.

June is ALS Awareness Month! This month, we take time to reflect, learn, and support those affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a condition that touches not only individuals, but families, friends, and entire communities. ALS brings many changes, but it does not define the strength, connection, or spirit of those navigating it.

As physiotherapists, our role is to walk alongside people living with ALS and make a meaningful difference in how individuals live through it, preserving mobility, easing discomfort, supporting breathing, and empowering people and their families to adapt with confidence. Whether it's through helping someone stay active, easing stiffness or discomfort, or guiding families through changes, physiotherapy is about adapting with care. Creating an environment for listening, learning together, and creating space for dignity, independence, and meaningful moments.

This month, we honour the experiences and resilience of those living with ALS and the community that surrounds them.

Did you know that physiotherapists play a vital role in delivering accessible, responsive primary health care in Canada. As first-contact professionals, physiotherapists contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and the management of acute and chronic conditions across various care settings.

In interprofessional, patient-centred models, physiotherapists collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care throughout an individual's lifespan. Their scope includes assessment, treatment, education, case management, and involvement in research and policy.

Benefits of physiotherapy in primary care include:

Early intervention and reduced wait times

Improved function and pain management

Decreased specialist referrals and absenteeism

Enhanced patient outcomes and satisfaction

Greater cost-effectiveness in care delivery

There is also an Explore the Primary Care module series “Preparing Physiotherapists for Team-Based Primary Care” available on the CPA website, to inform physiotherapists about their role in the team-based primary care environments.
