Bespoke 3D Printed Orthotics

In the past, the traditional process for creating orthotics has fallen into an “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” category of procedures. Characterized by high labour and time demands these traditional workflows produced orthotics that patients expected, but timelines could be long, and a great deal of waste is generated. The manual process involved the pouring, curing and sanding of plaster casts which resulted in a very limited ability to incorporate intricate design elements. However, technology has evolved and da Vinci Orthotics brings 3D Printed foot orthoses to your footwear. With the ability to accurately scan the feet, paired with industry leading CAD software that allows unlimited degrees of freedom to custom design your orthotics and print them using 3D printing technologies which set a new standard for precision, comfort and customization.

What's the difference between 3D printed insoles and traditional insoles?

- Accurate 3D Scanning - Instead of using analog casting methods (plaster cast or foam fast boxes), the foot is digitally scanned for a perfect anatomical structure, and can be corrected with an extremely high degree of precision.

-Customization – The high degree of customization and personalization of 3D printed orthotics offers enhanced biomechanical correction and patient comfort. These designs are tailored directly to the needs of the patient, allowing for optimal treatment and comfort. Examples of such customization include: support elements, blending regions of varying thicknesses to control support, lattice structures to reduce weight and increase flexibility along with custom relief area precisely applied from the digital cast of the foot.

-3D Prints orthotics are thin, durable and consistent all while reducing human error turnaround time and waste.

- The result? a clinically accurate device – offering a more comfortable and durable, orthotic. With our technology and professional input, every step you take is supported by some of the most innovative and advanced technologies.

How old are you Orthotics ? and how long do they typically last ? This is a very common question we get asked.

In general, it is wise to have orthotics checked every year as orthotics can wear out as soon as one year. Usually, five years is the maximum amount of time recommended because the foot may change in that time.

The exact time frame when the orthotics will wear out depends on the person. Someone wearing their orthotics all the time and working a lot on the feet will have their orthotics wear out sooner.
Certain orthotics may wear out faster if softer materials are used. Some will need these softer materials for various reasons, such as a condition they have or the pain they are experiencing.

Having a second pair of orthotics can help prolong the life of orthotics because the wear is spread out between multiple pairs.

Welcome to 2024! Here at da Vinic Orthotics, we are ushering in the New Year with the newest and most advanced technology in orthotic design and manufacturing. We now offer SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D Printed Orthotics.

SLS 3D printers start with a powder material which is swept over a printer bed in a very thin layer, just over the thickness of a human hair. A CO2 laser then binds the powder on the surface in a very precise design. As these thin layers are built upon each other, they create a strong bond which prevents the separation of layers. This allows use to create highly accurate, unique and customizable devices out of materials with superior proprieties and consistency.

What is unique at da Vinci Orthotics, is that we don’t just scan your feet and send it away for another clinician or lab to evaluate, design and fabricate your orthotics. The assessing Pedorthist ensures that your digitally created orthotics receive the same attention to detail as a traditional device, as they will directly design your orthotics ensuring the proper prescription is applied. This results in a high quality, truly custom orthotic from your local Pedorthist.

If you are looking for new orthotics, or would like to experience orthotics made with high precision, less waste and reduced turnaround times, book your appointment today!

Also stay tuned for examples of our SLS 3D Printed Orthotics! (Custom Patterns/Logos, Engraved Labelling, and the seamless integration or clinical modifications).

We can also still fabricate your orthotics through many other traditional and digital methods, as not every method is suitable for every foot!

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday
Q: Can Canadian Certified Pedorthists help with achilles tendinitis?
A: Canadian Certified Pedorthists are able to help by reducing stress at the achilles tendon by controlling the mechanics of the feet.
One way to control the feet is to look at your shoes. Make sure the running shoes you have are not worn out. Worn out shoes can increase the stress at the tendon and lead to an increase risk of tendinitis. Shoes without the proper support to control the heel can also contribute to tendonitis pain. Your Pedorthist can help you decide on the best shoes for your feet.
Supporting the feet through custom foot orthotics or over the counter inserts may also help reduce strain at the achilles tendon. Sometimes, a temporary wedge under the heel can be used to help with the healing process. Once the pain begins to subside, the aim is to remove the wedge.
