Building a successful private practice doesn’t happen overnight. You went to school to be a therapist but we never learned the systems and business behind a private practice. It is about so much more than just the clinical hours—it’s about the systems that keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
Running a multidisciplinary group practice in Vancouver has taught me that sustainability comes from structure. From finding the right tools to protecting your personal time, these are the pillars that actually built my practice:
* A seamless booking system: Tools like make life easier for both you and your clients—and you can get your first month free with my code AMYKOBELT1MO.
* Targeted marketing: Focus on a strategy that works for your specific niche and goals.
* SEO-optimized website: Being findable by the right clients is essential for growth.
* Structured admin time: Pairing paperwork with a ritual you enjoy, like a latte at a local cafe, keeps the momentum going.
* Clinical and business support: Investing in supervision and private practice consultation was the best move I made for my own professional health!
* A sustainable schedule: Building a life-giving practice means creating time blocks that work for your lifestyle, not against it.

Private practice doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It should give you the freedom and sustainability you need to do your best work.

Last year I came back to Colombia by myself for a month and I was definitely nervous, despite lot’s of experience solo travelling before. This post was in my drafts and I completely forgot about it, but now that I’m back again doing the solo-travel thing I thought now was a good time to remind me of the lessons I learned last year, and share it with you! 🌎

After three years of traveling with my husband, I wondered if my “solo-traveler spirit” was still in there. It turned out to be like putting on an old pair of jeans—the fit felt a little different, but it still felt like me.
Traveling solo reminded me of a few things that I am trying to apply to my life outside of travel as well!
1️⃣ Independence is a muscle. It might feel stiff if you haven’t used it for a while, but it’s still there.
2️⃣ Your time is your own. You are allowed to ask: “Is this how I want to spend my day?” instead of defaulting to what everyone else prefers.
3️⃣ Growth and vulnerability are a package deal. Showing up alone is hard, but the pride on the other side of that “push” is worth it.
I realized that building a life (and a career) on my own terms can feel like this at times. It’s a lot of responsibility, and the directions can be confusing (literally, I cannot even get where I need to go even with Google maps, your girl is DIRECTIONALLY challenged 😅😂), but it’s the only way to ensure that your final destination is somewhere you actually want to be.

I hope this can inspire you to take the leap and plan that trip - even if no one can come with you! I’d love to hear from you in the comments - what have you learned about yourself while doing something alone? ⬇️✨

Thank you .canada for having me today! It was a pleasure to teach on risk assessments to two of your counselling co-horts! It doesn’t feel like that long ago I was in the student chair learning all of this for the first time, but time flies when you’re having fun! 🎉

I don’t advertise this often, but if you are looking for clinical support I do offer supervision for therapists in addition to business consulting for your private practice. If you’re interested in either of these services feel free to reach out here or through my website :)

2025 Travel Wrapped 🎉✈️

While 2025 was not as travel focused as some of my previous years, I still managed some stamps on my passport 🌎

Celebrating the places I did go while honoring the real life that happened in between—because only part of the story makes it to Instagram.

Sharing this for anyone (especially therapists) wondering what a more realistic version of a nomadic life can look like. Always open to conversation, and wishing you all an amazing, dream-filled 2026 ✨

Do you dream of a vacation where you don’t secretly check your email? Because I sure do!

I just came back from an amazing two weeks off, and I can tell you: this was the first vacation in a LONG time where I was completely disconnected from both client work and running my practice.
I’ll be honest, it was scary and a stretch at times—and there were a few things I had to loop into on the group practice side—but wow, did it feel amazing to go on vacation without doing sessions in the mornings before exploring. It allowed me to truly put my “therapist hat” away and focus on traveling, learning, resting, and exploring.

If you’re a private practice therapist, taking time off often feels impossible because you worry about client care and cash flow. But your ability to show up for clients is directly tied to your ability to step away!
I condensed everything I learned into these 5 Non-Negotiables for a Guilt-Free Vacation. Swipe through to see the steps I take every time:
1    Budgeting - shoutout to for her amazing budget template. I use it religiously and it’s helped me a lot in feeling great about going on vacation when there’s no vacation pay!
2    Boundaries: set boundaries with yourself - no checking that email even if you want to! And make sure those boundaries are communicated in your email responder
3    Back up: making sure you have ethical support and coverage for when you’re away. Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for help!

Which step do you struggle with the most? Let me know in the comments! 👇

This summer isn’t just about beach reads and iced lattes, it’s also for learning how to take up space as a therapist 💛

I’m a summer lover, and yes- I’m also living for Wednesdays (iykyk 👀) this summer ☀️

Here’s the real encouragement for my fellow therapists:

-You can enforce your cancellation policy without guilt
-Actually disconnect and take that vacation (your clients will be okay 💕)
-Be brave enough to launch the thing that’s not totally perfect 🫶🏻

If you’re in the season where things feel scary and expansive - this one’s for you ✨

Would love to hear from you in yeh comments: what’s your summer lesson?! ☀️

Also, I have to ask… or ? ( forever though)

To every therapist who has ever doubted themselves: this one’s for you.

We all know that therapy isn’t about having it all together, and that just because you are a a therapist doesn’t mean you won’t also struggle too.

Imposter syndrome and self doubt are so common in therapists that it almost seems like a right of passage to go through those feelings.

These are some of my favourite reminders and lessons I’ve learned in my journey as a therapist and in private practice, inspired by .a.evans’s self compassion post 💕 because two things can be true at the same time: you can doubt yourself AND be a great therapist.

Save these for when you need a reminder that you’re a human too! Or share with your therapist friends who need these today 💕

I would love to hear which ones resonate with you, and which lessons you would add in! ✨

If you need some support or mentorship feel free to send me a DM or use my booking link. 💛

To the therapist quietly dreaming of private practice — I’m here to be brave with you. 🎉☺️
My own journey has been anything but linear:
➡️ I worked with multiple group practices
➡️ Started my solo practice online during COVID
➡️ Opened a physical office
➡️ Expanded to a group practice
➡️ And then… packed it all up to travel the world for a year ✈️
Every decision felt both exciting and terrifying.
I’ve sat in anxiety. Paralysis. The “who am I to do this?” moments.
And I’ve also felt the deep joy of building something that reflects who I am — not just what I was taught.
That’s why I’m officially sharing about a new offering: 1:1 consulting support for therapists ready to build or reshape their practice.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or making your practice feel more you — I’m here for it.
Because private practice CAN be your dream job ☺️
✨ You get to design your work around your life — not squeeze your life around your work.
If you’re longing for support — both practical guidance and emotional grounding — I’d love to connect.
Whether you’re just starting or ready to change direction, you don’t have to figure it out alone. 💛 Send me a DM or use the link in my bio to schedule a free consultation call

If this resonated with you, say hi below - I love connecting with other therapists and would love to hear where you are at! ✨
