I think this is my favourite idea yet of how to “play” around with perfectionism, and notice what shows up when we are faced with the blank page and asked to be imperfect, raw and unpredictable.

My little blank page busting cube!
(Imperfection dice? I’m not sure what to name them yet)

A gamified way to help us work through perfectionism in our art, so we can release it in our everyday life too.

The idea is that the dice helps us bust through the overwhelm and decision fatigue that comes with perfectionism in our art, and allows us to actually get started.. and actually play!

When we enter a state of play, we can start to have a more self compassionate inner narrative and acceptance of ourselves while we make imperfect, messy and playful art - then we can start to bring that same self compassion and kinder inner narrative into our daily life too.

Perfectionism in art might be our own fear of getting it wrong, but even more so - the fear of the shame of getting it wrong (whether that’s according to ourselves or being judged by others). We can’t be in a place of expression and freedom when we are plagued by fear, so play is the best way to enter that state where we know that we cannot get it wrong!

Plus, when we use techniques like this to play and warm up, it doesn’t feel so serious! We can then go into a more self reflective creative invitation where we will explore ourselves a bit more deeply - and not have that perfectionism upfront and centre.

Would you call yourself a perfectionist? Would you be open to trying something like art therapy to work with those feelings?

Whether you identify as an artist or not, we are all inherent creative beings. Everything we do in the world is the act of creating our life.

So why when it comes to making art do we feel like we either “are” or we “aren’t” an artist?

A lot of people think you either need to sell, share, or people to like your art in order to call yourself an artist. Often times our perfectionism is part of the problem telling us that if our art isn’t perfect, how dare we call ourselves an artist?!
But I just genuinely don’t think that’s true.

Because the definition of being an artist is someone who makes art. Simply that.

The art of life, the art of cooking, the art of friendships, the art of decorating, the art of gardening, the art of family, and the traditional art with art supplies too.

I think reclaiming your identity as an artist can heal your life in so many ways. Giving yourself permission to be messy, playful and creative in all aspects of life - reclaiming your artist identity reminds you of your humanity ❤️

So repeat after me:
I am an artist!
Born to create, not to prove.
Free to be messy, curious and play.
I let the process lead me, and I trust myself as I go.

Why is safety and comfort in the art therapy space so important?

Well, the physical space is the container for everything else that happens there.

When someone feels even a little bit on edge, their nervous system stays in a protective state. That can look like overthinking, rushing, trying to “do it right,” or not wanting to go deeper.

But when the body senses safety and comfort, it naturally moves into a state where curiosity, connection, and creativity are more available.

In a space that feels calm, predictable, and welcoming, we soften. People take more meaningful risks in their art. They might choose a material they’ve never tried, follow a feeling instead of a plan, or stay with an image a little longer. That’s where insight tends to emerge. The creative process support regulation and meaning-making, but that only really happens when the person feels grounded enough to engage.

There’s also the relational side.
The room, the materials, and the therapist all communicate something without words. Art therapy isn’t just about the image, it’s about the relationship around the image.

If the space feels “too clean to make a mess”, rushed, or loud, people tend to stay on the surface.

But if it feels steady and respectful, the art can reflect more.

And then there’s the materials themselves.
Some materials are loose and fluid, some are more controlled and structured. You need to feel safe enough that you’re not going to mess up the space around you (ie: look at the drips on the ground and walls in these studios!)

In simple terms, comfort and safety isn’t just a nice extra.
It’s what allows the art therapy process to actually emerge and be of support to the artist.

When you stop trying to plan your art or make it look a certain way, your relationship to the purpose of art making will change.

Just being immersed in the creative process can give you a bit of space to notice what’s actually going on inside yourself.

Sometimes meaning or messages show up in the symbols, sometimes in how you move your brush across the page, or what you notice you keep going being drawn to.

Your art and the creative process start to show you things you weren’t trying to figure out when you stop trying to have it all figured out from the start.

In the recent session of “The Creative Circle” (my 1x monthly therapeutic art group for busy people who want a consistent place to turn inwards and make meaningful art for self-discovery… wow that’s a mouthful),

We explored the theme of dreams and goals.

I bet when you think of dreams and goals, the first thing that might come to mind is planning, grind, hustle or work.

But what if you could step into the version of yourself that you hope to become, simply by exploring wha it feels like to be them? And what if you can do that, through art!

The piece of art I created was a mix of 2/3 of the prompts.

(in my workshops I always give lots of choice, autonomy, and freedom)

So I made a piece of art that combined feeling into the frequency of my future self who has their dreams realized, and bridging in the metaphor of using a map.

You see, in the therapeutic art, we try not to plan on the art that we are making. Our inner wisdom comes through when we allow ourselves to be open to the process. When we are trying to control the outcome, we can’t have the expansiveness and find answers to questions that we’ve never known before.

So when I made my art, I naturally move towards colours and movements that felt like the frequency of my dream come true. The symbol of this amazingly authentic woman came through and it feels like she’s calling me towards moving across the threshold.

The first time people make art in this very unique way it can often be hard to put what you feel into words. And that’s the cool thing about Art Therapy, you don’t actually even have to put it into words at all if you don’t want to. Our artwork and the creative process can evoke emotions and feelings that we trust percolate through even if we don’t have the perfect words to explain them.

And until the life of this image continues because when I look at it, I see there is a portal to a future self. A portal to a future frequency.

Of course I could sit and journal and use the Art Therapy techniques to find the meaning in the essence, but for now, that’s not necessary. Because just making space for this Art to be born, was enough to shift my energy.

Art gives us a small pocket of space for whatever we need.

Maybe it’s to slow down. To play.
Maybe to process something that’s been sitting in the background of our minds.
Or simply to step out of the noise of the world for a moment.

You’re invited to step into this new year, softly.

I’m an art therapist and I can empathize that so many of us already feel like we’ve “failed” or have to “give up” when it’s a week or two into the new year and we don’t stick to our resolution.

Well, I believe there’s another way to achieve your goals.
No actually, I KNOW there’s another way.

It’s to set soft and gentle intentions rooted in self love, self kindness, self trust and empathy - and carry them out with a gentle action plan that your nervous system actually feels safe with.

Resolutions and traditional goals feel ridgid, intense, and can bring on an “all or nothing” mentality even for the best of us.

But your life doesn’t expand through rigidity!
It expands with softness.

I could go on and on with how this art and writing process has helped me achieve my dreams in the last few years but I’d rather you start to experience it yourself.

Softly ☁️✨ is a therapeutic art and writing program designed to help you ground, release limiting beliefs, manifest your desires, and set a gentle intention action plan for your most expansive yet soft year yet.

Designed by an art therapist, totally self paced!
New years pricing ends at sun down on 01.07 but the program will remain open until the end of the month ☁️✨

creativity gives us a doorway into something bigger than our everyday thoughts.

When we make art or sit down to write,
we step outside the busy voice of the mind
and into a softer, more intuitive place inside us.
In that space, we can dream a little wider and imagine possibilities we might not have seen before.

Art and writing help us loosen the beliefs that say we have to stay small or realistic.

They let us explore who we are becoming, not just who we have been.

They remind us that we carry wisdom, imagination, and potential beneath the surface of daily life.

Through creativity,
we can gently release old limitations.
We can connect with hope, curiosity,
and our deeper sense of self.

And in that creative space,
it often becomes easier to trust that we are allowed to grow, to dream, and to move toward a life that feels more aligned with who we truly are.

Creating more space inside of ourselves and our life israrely as simple as just cutting things away.

A softer life is also about how we treat ourselves on the inside.
It’s meeting ourselves with self compassion instead of self criticism.
It’s loosening the old beliefs that tell us we have to push, perform, or stay busy to be worthy.
It’s allowing rest without guilt.
It’s honoring our energy, our limits, and our nervous system.

Softness isn’t about doing less for the sake of it.
It’s about creating space for what truly supports us,
so we can move through our days with more tenderness, presence, and trust in our own pace.
