Did you know that in British Columbia, you have the right to breastfeed your baby anywhere that you and your baby are permitted to be? It's true! While you can use a cover or a private space if you wish, you are not required to do so by law. You are free to feed your baby however makes you most comfortable.

Between nursing, weight checks, pumping, and storing milk it can be easy to fall into the trap of measuring success in ounces pumped or bottles fed.

Remember: any amount of breast milk is beneficial for your baby. Every drop of milk you are able to provide is a beautiful gift, and you should feel proud of this accomplishment!

If you are struggling with breastfeeding or milk production, reach out to an IBCLC for help.

Just a heads up… as I am due with my second baby mid-August, I will be suspending in-person consultations/visits for the remainder of my pregnancy and early postpartum period. I will continue to offer virtual appointments when possible and will be active on our Facebook group The Canadian Lactation Collective, offering text-based support.

I intend to resume in-person meetings in September or October, as our recovery allows.

Thanks for everyone’s patience and understanding.

Happy Breastfeeding Week!

Sleepless nights are one of the most challenging aspects of new parenthood. You may have heard from friends, family, or sometimes healthcare professionals that you should give your baby formula or rice cereal in a bottle to help them sleep through the night. In reality, waking during the night to feed is biologically normal/healthy behaviour for newborns and may help protect against SIDS. Some babies will begin to consolidate their sleep patterns around 5-6 months of age, but due to the definition of "sleeping through the night" (ie, 5 hours according the AAP) they may still wake once or twice before morning.

There is no evidence that giving your baby formula will help them - or you! - to get a longer, more restful sleep. More importantly, adding rice cereal to bottles is considered to be a risk factor for choking/aspiration and should never be recommended.

If you're struggling due to lack of sleep, ask for help. Napping during the day while baby is asleep, or having a friend/family member watch baby for a short while so you can nap may make all the difference.

It can be difficult not to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to other moms. But in reality, not only is every woman different but so is every baby and every breastfeeding journey. Some women leak, some women don't. Some women leak out of only one breast, some women leak from both. Some women feel their letdowns, some women don't. As long as you are meeting your breastfeeding goals and baby is thriving, this is all normal and you're doing a great job!

If you are unsure whether you are producing enough milk, reach out to a trained professional for help and support.
