As therapists we know that searching for a new therapist can be time consuming and difficult ! There are so many different types of therapy and so many different qualifications. One positive thing to keep in mind is that research shows the most important determining factor for treatment outcome is a GOOD FIT between clients and therapists. "John Gottman from the Gottman Institute has done extensive research regarding relationships and what makes them happy.

One of the more interesting findings is about the magic ratio. After examining couples and how they dealt with conflict, it seemed that happy couples for who love lasts show five positive interactions for each negative one.

[...]So, let’s say there is a conflict between a couple where one criticizes the other. Then, to resolve this conflict they can try positive interactions, which for example are showing empathy, apologizing, being affectionate, showing appreciation or interest."

reframing thoughts through parts work.

We may feel some ‘parts’ of ourselves more acutely at different times.Sometimes a part can feel so dominant it begins to feel like our most accurate self. Although it can feel natural to align completely with one thought or emotions, over-identifying with one part can cause us to overlook other feelings and sensations we may be experiencing. It can be helpful to acknowledge our emotions as parts of ourselves rather than our whole or only selves. Seeing emotions as parts makes room for all our emotions, even those that feel conflicting.
