Being from Vancouver, we are not foreign to the disturbing prevalence of homelessness that is rampantly scattered throughout our streets. Many ignore and neglect this concerning issue because it doesn't directly affect them, but not a lot of people are aware of the statistics behind it. Of the nearly 2,000 homeless people in Vancouver, over 54% suffer from two or more health conditions - many of which are mental illnesses that make it incredibly difficult to find work and alleviate their situation. And sadly, 20% of the homeless are youths and young adults under the age of 25. For our first project, we are striving to provide toques to all of Vancouver's homeless community to help keep them warm during these cold winter months. We know our goal is ambitious but we are determined to make a difference. For each Hastings Toque sold, we will provide another toque to someone in need. From the support of people like you, we will be able to tackle more social issues within the community. Stay tuned for more as we release new projects in support of deserving causes.

Homeless youth are defined as those who left home at the age of 16 and are up to 24 years old. However it is difficult to get a sense of the number of youth on the street as they tend to avoid shelters. Lets do what we can to support our own local communities!

Homelessness was not an issue in Vancouver until after the 1980s. Prior to then, there had generally been enough affordable housing provided by surpluses from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Today was a good day. Salt Water City Co. is new. In fact we’re very new and that’s what’s so special about us; that’s why today was a good day. Today I had the privilege of driving down Arbutus Street towards Broadway and as I was turning left on Broadway, stopped behind a few cars, I saw a gentleman walking beside me. The familiarity was instant; he was smiling and chatting to another man at the bus stop with his belongings. He was wearing one of our SWC toques and the adrenaline hit me. The way something so new and so small like Salt Water City Co., and giving someone a toque can come full circle so quickly. It inspires us, it drives us, it fuels us to keep pursuing our small company’s vision of putting a toque on the head of every homeless person in Vancouver. We have only started, but today, today was a good day.

On December 25th, Alexander Epstein, Elliott Grubner, and the handy David Epstein set up shop on East Hastings and Main to hand out some donuts, coffee, and toques. We had the opportunity to speak with some really interesting people and hear a little bit about their stories living in Vancouver, and where they were from originally. Happy Holidays!!! Today Alex and Elliott will be downtown handing out toques to the homeless as part of our mission to keep our community warm this winter. We just wanted to quickly announce our appreciation and a big THANK YOU to all of you who have supported us in purchasing toques, sharing our messages, and sending us awesome pictures of themselves wearing our toque. If anyone wants to find us today we'll be wearing a black 'Hastings' toque, as well as black crew neck sweaters!!! We'll be the guys spreading the holiday spirit!! Have a great day!!!

Hello to all!! This Christmas season, Alex Epstein and Elliott Grubner will be handing out toques on the downtown east side. If anyone needs a holiday gift this year, the 'Hastings' toque should fit the bill! Not only do you get a cool toque to keep you warm, but you know that when you're wearing it, someone else in need is wearing the same toque and staying warm because of you!
