CPA Web-based Workshop: Exploring Screen Addiction, Excessive or Otherwise Non-integrated Use of Screen-based Technologies
https://cpa.ca/professionaldevelopment/webcourses/catalogue/

Screen-based technologies (computers, tablets, gaming consoles, phones, pads and pods) are fully assimilated in modern life (scholastics, work, research and play). Interactive technology is in every workplace, school and home, car, purse and pocket. But what is this doing to our brains and behavior; to our base neurophysiology? Much use is innocuous and just a reflection of modern times. But in clinical populations (and broadening sections of non-clinical populations), there appears to be a direct correlation between excessive and inappropriate screen usage and aliments or symptoms for which individuals are seeking psychological services–anxiety, depression, OCD, ICD, learning disabilities and ADHD, behavior disorders, conduct disorders, sexual dysfunction, marital/partner conflict and discord, anger management, and insomnia. Screen-Addiction is one of the most misunderstood and complex emergent addictions. This talk will go far beyond the questions of ‘is it real?’ exploring the biological/neurophysiological bases of content addiction (e.g., po*******hy), process addiction (e.g., communication/texting) combined (e.g., gaming) and compounding crossover – and most importantly what to do about it!

Dr. Swingle says “Clients often do not need to verbalize to me why they are seeking treatment. Their brain does all the talking instead.”

At the Swingle Clinic, we conduct a unique ClinicalQ brainwave assessment to identify how the brain is functioning. Using this information, we can explain precisely why an individual feels or acts the way they do. Complemented by client self-reports, this brain wave data allows our clinicians to create an individualized in-clinic and at-home treatment plan, guiding clients toward healing and recovery.

The first step to taking control of your mental health is reaching out. If you would like more information, please feel free to send us a message here or give us a call at 604-608-0444.

While there are transferable skills that gamers acquire, Dr. Swingle explains that excessive gaming and addiction may result in reduced creativity, increased agitation, hyperarousal, stress, and insomnia. Gamers can lose the balance between work, play, scholastics, and socialization. There are very distinct brain deregulation patterns in those who become addicted or otherwise play to excess. When gaming, the brain goes into a state of hyperarousal—we can play for hours upon hours, if not days. In the article, Clinical Counsellor Benjamin Wong also touches on his personal experience as a gamer and how he used gaming as a way to “escape thinking about his personal life, relationships, schooling, and future.”

If you would like to learn more about the effects of excessive screen time and gaming on our mood, physiology, development, mental health, and culture in general, you may want to pick up a copy or listen to the second edition audiobook of i-Minds: How and Why Constant Connectivity is Rewiring Our Brains and What to Do About It. (New Society Publishers) by Dr. Mari Swingle.

In a recent study, researchers looked at the difficulties faced by those working from home as well as those transitioning back from remote work to in-office work. Individuals working remotely showed higher brain wave markers associated with overwork, stress and fatigue, especially during tasks such as video-call meetings and collaborating with colleagues. The transition back to in-office work was also shown to cause increased stress.

Additional discomforts associated with remote work and COVID-19 such as feeling distant, lacking a designated workspace, and facing distractions at home, all contribute to the additional stress many of us are feeling. As we navigate through the COVID-19 crisis together, it is incredibly important that we maintain and improve our mental health and wellbeing alongside our physical health.

One of the therapies we offer at the Swingle Clinic is increasing stress tolerance to allow clients to be better equipped to deal with situations that cause distress and anxiety. At-home treatments such as Serene and Serene-Sweep may not only be incredibly beneficial towards improving sleep, stress-modulation and mood states but may also help maintain the gain that clients make in treatments at the clinic.
