January is glaucoma awareness month. This painless eye disease has been named the silent thief of sight because it has no symptoms until advanced stages. The only way to know if you have glaucoma is by having a routine, regular comprehensive eye exam from a thorough optometrist or ophthalmologist. Early detection and proper treatment and follow-up are the keys to preserving your precious vision. We use advanced diagnostic instruments to measure your eye pressure and take highly detailed images of your optic nerve and related structures, which guides our diagnosis and treatment. Some people are at greater risk than others - book an appointment and our qualified doctors will review your history and eye health with you so that you understand your risk.

January is always a good time to think about how your routine habits contribute to your overall health and wellness - booking an eye exam should be on your list. Talk to your family members and make sure they are getting routine eye exams. See your optometrist and protect your vision.

November is diabetes awareness month! Unfortunately, complications from diabetes are one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. The great news is type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed for many people. Decreasing your risk involves making healthy lifestyle choices. You already know what I’m going to say helps: a healthy diet and regular exercise. What you eat is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle change. Avoid highly processed foods, refined white grains, and sugary foods or drinks. Eat more vegetables, plant-based proteins, whole grains, lean meats, and nuts.  Aim for 150 minutes of aerobic exercise like brisk walking, jogging, or bike riding per week. Start slowly and build up to your goal!
👁👁👁
Your routine eye exam is an essential part of your health care. Signs of diabetes can be detected in the eyes, sometimes before a diagnosis of diabetes has even been made! Early diagnosis and treatment, when necessary, are crucial to reducing the risk of vision loss from diabetes.

How clean are your eyelids? We brush and floss our teeth daily to keep them healthy, but often overlook our ocular hygiene. Overgrowth of bacteria and demodex mites on our eyelids leads to inflammation and dry eye symptoms. If you experience red, burning, gritty sensation, film in your vision or fluctuating vision come and see us! A note from Dr. Flak:

May is Vision Health Month, which is a great time to talk about what we can do to prevent vision loss from eye disease. Getting an eye exam by your optometrist is always the best resource for information about your eye health. Since we're not doing exams at the moment, please read on to find out what you can be doing every day to protect your most precious sense - your vision.

I cannot overstate the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Generally, people are aware of this - but did you know that healthy eating and exercise reduce your risk of the most common cause of vision loss in people over 55?!!
👀

1. Maintain a healthy weight

2. Eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables and make sure to include kale and orange peppers - they're full of nutrients that are crucial for central vision. Limit foods that are highly processed or contain added sugars

3. Exercise regularly - even 20 minutes a day is beneficial

4. Don't smoke

Stay healthy and happy, everyone :) I'm excited to see you all soon in person at the clinic.
