Today, there was an opportunity to share some of our struggles with primary care physician recruitment at the ROMA Conference in Toronto.

The more we can advocate for positive change the better off all residents of eastern Ontario will be.

Peterborough County had a productive meeting at the
Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference with Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, and her team to discuss physician recruitment, emphasizing the urgent need for rural physicians. Also highlighted was the importance of bringing foreign-trained doctors home and the work being done by Peterborough County and EOPRA Eastern Ontario Physician Recruitment Alliance to address these challenges.

The primary care crisis in Eastern Ontario is set to deepen in the coming years, as 394 practicing physicians—currently aged 60 or older—prepare for retirement. Together, these physicians care for 501,487 patients and have earned the right to step back from their demanding roles. Yet, many are delaying retirement, hoping someone will take over their practices.

With 394 pending vacancies and an additional 883 physicians needed to address the existing gap, the challenge ahead is immense. It’s clear we must come together, think creatively, and make primary care a highly desirable career choice for future medical professionals.

The Eastern Ontario Physician Recruitment Alliance is committed to being part of the solution, and we are eager to collaborate to help close the gap. What other strategies can we explore together? Are you ready to be part of the solution?

The Eastern Ontario Physician Recruitment Alliance (EOPRA) is attending the Family Medicine Forum in Vancouver, which is a major event for family physicians and healthcare professionals. Our presence underscores a commitment to attracting family doctors to Eastern Ontario, addressing the region's needs for accessible primary healthcare. This collaboration reflects EOPRA's goal to bring dedicated healthcare professionals to Eastern Ontario and improve local healthcare services. The message, "Together, we all win," highlights the alliance's belief in the shared benefits for communities, healthcare providers, and patients alike.

EOPRA is happy to represent in Dublin Ireland today at our first repatriation event. There has been hundreds of students coming through today grateful to see us and for the assistance that we will be able to offer so that they can come home to practice medicine.

We are excited to announce the launch of EOPRA! A membership based alliance of 15 physician recruiters representing communities across Eastern Ontario. We will be working collectively to attract and retain physicians who are either Canadian citizens who are completing their medical education out of country, or internationally trained physicians who are looking to move to Ontario.
