By the time our kids turn 12, we’ve already shared about 75% of the time we’ll have with them before they grow up - this makes me feel so sad 😞 our eldest has just turned 11. Whenever I speak to parents with older kids they say the same thing - try to enjoy every moment as they grow up so fast and then they don’t need you as much any more. They all wish they could turn back the clock…

I am trying more and more to:

Go to the game ⚽️ ⚾️
Sit at the dinner table 🍴
Listen to their stories 📖
Say yes to that walk 🚶🏼‍♀️
Stay a bit longer at bedtime ❤️

When should I start taking my child to the dentist? 🦷

Earlier than most parents think!

According to the Canadian Dental Association, children should see a dentist within 6 months of their first tooth appearing, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first.

Why so early?

✔️ Check teeth are developing normally
✔️ Spot early signs of cavities
✔️ Get advice on brushing, fluoride and diet
✔️ Help your child feel comfortable at the dentist from the start

The first visit is usually quick and mostly about education for parents. Think of it as a “well-baby check for teeth.”

💡 Tip: Start brushing with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth appears 🦷

This replaces the old guideline of waiting until 2 to give fluoride!

Five things I would do as a doctor to protect my kids mental health 🧠

1. Limit screen time - we know screens affect behaviour and they aren’t sociable. This can lead to kids being withdrawn. I would choose TV over close up screens like iPads and phones as we know this can also affect eyesight.

2. Ban YouTube and kids YouTube. They’re so bad for children! Aimless scrolling which is unmonitored. It’s a no from me! There are so many better things to watch. I honestly think kids YouTube affects behaviour in a very negative way. What do you think?

3. Put off getting a phone for as long as possible. I see 9 year olds with phones.. why?! We know it’s a slippery slope as soon as our child has one. Don’t cave to peer pressure. Stand your ground. Get a landline or WiFi phone if needed or even a watch if worried about safety when out.

4. Put off social media until at least 16. We know it’s horrendous for our mental health. Even as adults. I wish it would be banned here until 16 like some other countries.

5. Stay in sports and activities. Children who play team sports have lower rates of anxiety, depression, and behavioural problems compared with kids who don’t play sports. There is then also less time after school for screen time and phones! It’s lovely for kids to have friends outside of school also.

Most girls drop out of sports around 13–14 years old 😞

By age 14, girls drop out of sport at about twice the rate of boys.

Around 1 in 3 girls who played sport in childhood stop participating during early teens.

The biggest drop-off happens between ages 12–15.

Main reasons girls quit:

Studies usually find these top factors:

⚽ Loss of confidence or feeling they aren’t “good enough”
📚 School pressure and time commitments
👭 Social factors (friends leaving, wanting to do other activities)
🧍‍♀️ Body image/puberty changes
😕 Overly competitive environments rather than fun

Girls who stay in sport until 16 are much more likely to stay active as adults.

The presence of female role models and supportive coaching environments dramatically increases retention.

Keep supporting your daughters and encouraging them 💪🏽 Let’s keep them playing sports!

7 things I do consistently to stay lean as a doctor and busy mom of 3.

1. I make sure I eat enough protein 1.5-2g per kg per day. It keeps me full and maintains muscle mass. If you’re struggling for ideas try Greek yogurt, eggs, protein shakes

2. Take creatinine : creatinine helps maintain muscle. It also increases muscle performance which helps us to lift heavier weights therefore increasing muscle mass. This is especially important in our 30’s and 40’s and beyond. 3-5 g a day is fine. Myth : It won’t cause kidney problems! BUT speak to a doctor first if you do have kidney issues or any chronic health issues.

3. Steps - very underrated but it is so easy to be sedentary. Aim for at least 10,000 steps a day. I walk on my lunch break and in the evenings if no time in the day.

4. Sleep - prioritise this as this is when our body regenerates and cells heal. Most people do need 7-8 hours a night. Tricky I know when the kids are very young but it does become easier once they are sleeping through the night.

5. Track macro’s - you don’t have to be obsessive but you need to be accountable. I use my fitness pal to track calories - I’m not obsessive with it but I am pretty consistent now with what I eat so know my calories and macros. It’s also ok to have the odd cheat day! But remember maintaining your weight is 80% food and 20% exercise.

6. Weight training - this is essential as we get older. Women lose 8% of their muscle every decade and we can reverse it with regular weight training. You can then gradually lift heavier and heavier!

7. Cardio - I love to run and do HIIT training 2-3 times a week. This keeps me lean and also improves heart health and overall fitness. It’s such a natural endorphin too!

Should my child take a multivitamin? 🤔

It’s a question so many parents ask—and the honest answer is……it depends!!!

Ideally, kids would get everything they need from food alone. But real life with kids? It can be tricky….

Just remember, a multivitamin isn’t a replacement for healthy food, but it can help fill nutritional gaps when:

✔️ Your child is a picky eater
✔️ They avoid certain food groups (like fish, vegetables, or dairy)
✔️ They’re going through a rapid growth phase
✔️ Illness or stress has affected appetite or absorption

If you’re unsure, it’s always worth chatting with your healthcare provider 👩🏼‍⚕️ For many families, a well formulated multivitamin can be a helpful support to bridge those nutritional gaps.

✨ Food first. Support when needed.

One whole year in business! 🎉 🎉 🎉

One year in business and one big lesson I didn’t expect… We launched The Kids Vitamin Doctor just under a year ago with 3 products we truly believed in. What I didn’t fully appreciate then is how much the story behind the products actually matters. This year has totally changed the way I buy things myself! 👩🏼‍⚕️

Now, when I’m choosing a product, I don’t JUST look at the ingredients, the packaging, the price. I look for the founder and their story. I want to know all about them! Why did they start their brand? What problem were they trying to solve? Are they a local company? And are they a genuine, nice person?! 😀

Building a brand is so very personal. It usually comes from a frustration, or a moment that makes you say - there HAS to be a better way to do this…. 🧐

Being on the other side of it now, I see how much risk and persistence sits behind every new brand. The late nights. The doubt 😣 The tiny wins that feel enormous! 👏🏽 The resilience it takes to keep going….. 💪🏽

As we head into year two, I’m so proud not just of what we’ve built - but WHY we built it! 🙌🏽 And as a consumer, I will NEVER shop the same way again.

Shout out to every founder - your story matters so much more than you think - so make sure you keep sharing it with the world 🌎🫶🏼
