Are you a “natural” or a “normal” human being?
Seems like its rare to find a modern human living a “natural” life these days.
More common the “normal life”: ie. urban situation, disconnected from the land that sustains you, isolated from community, lucky if your work feels “meaningful”, on clock time, etc.
We now have the bodies to go with these lifestyles too: “normal” bodies nowadays are stiff, weighed down, undernourished, used to sitting down, mostly indoors.
“Natural” bodies move freely and swiftly, adapting to the landscape rather than paving it over for ease. Natural bodies easily squat, jump, run, reach, climb, swim, carry and - perhaps most importantly - can be still.
If you’re living in a body that’s more “normal” than you’d like, practicing yoga postures can help. Simple shapes and movements, that safely explore the full range of motion of your spine and joints, can reawaken lost natural capacities.
Add conscious breathing and mental concentration to the mix, then your nervous system and mind can also rediscover their lost capacities.
Such practice probably won’t happen though, unless you make room for it in your life. But since a little bit goes such a LONG way, it’s worth carving out even just 15 minutes a day. How?
Well, thankfully, the science of yoga is accompanied by its sibling: Ayurveda (literally, “life-science”.)
Ayurveda is the health system of India and views the human being as more than just the body: you are also a mind, a soul, your senses and more.
Among many important things, it provides us with common-sense teachings on daily routines, seasonal changes and much more.
All with an underlying view that a natural life, lived in tune with our inner/outer environments, yields greater health and contentment for the human being.
I want to introduce you to this powerful wisdom. To show you how you can apply it to your life. And make small, steady changes for the better.
