First Light Yoga

First Light Yoga Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Vancouver
Early-morning classes for assisted, personalized self-practice

First Light Yoga is an early-morning yoga program in East Vancouver, BC, offering daily classes, where we teach students a personalized yoga self-practice. Our purpose is to support people who want to practice yoga as a dynamic morning self-care routine, in the knowledge that it sets them up well for the day ahead. We attract folk who want to work consistently on one method, with one teacher. They are self-motivated and value independence within the structure of a system. Our teaching is guided by the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga method, which we apply as a model, not a strict dogma. We are located at Bridge & Enrich Lives Society ("BE"), a warm and welcoming sanctuary on Fraser Street. “BE” is home to practitioners from various interest groups, all sharing a space with the common objective to enrich lives. Address: 718 E 20th avenue (at fraser st), Vancouver, bc

Thank you Sharath, for all your gifts.
For everything you taught me.

You could see my potential and inspired me toward it.
You helped me see the potential of all who walked through my doors.
You taught me that less is often more when it comes to teaching.
Your trust in me lifted me up. To serve alongside you was humbling and thrilling.
Your blessing, when given, carried more weight than I realized at the time.
You gave us the leeway to make the practice work for anyone who wanted it (something far too many are sadly unaware of…)
Everyone who I have helped since 2006 has benefitted from your discipline, dedication, devotion and compassion.
I have never worked so hard or concentrated so deeply as when I practiced in your classroom. Oh, to be able to return there one day…

“So much perfection is there…”

RIP Sri R. Sharath Jois
1971 - 2024

My heart goes out to your family.
And to all of us around the world who were blessed by your teaching.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is about doing stressful things in a calm way.
Without proper breathing, it’s just gonna be all stress: physical, mental, emotional.
And that’s the exact opposite of what we’re aiming for.

Want to be able to do sun salutations easefully and gracefully…?
Focus on your breathing.
Want to be able to find economy and efficiency in all your transitions and posture setups?
Focus on your breathing.
Want your mind to stay in the room and in your body while you practice?
Focus on your breathing.
Want to calm your nervous system as you approach a very challenging section of your series?
Focus on your breathing.
Want to get more understanding about how to develop each of the postures and your current limitations within them?
Focus on your breathing.
Want to make your practice more of a meditation than a workout?
Focus on your breathing.
Want to actually drop into a deep meditative state at the end of your practice (instead of just falling asleep in savasana?)
Carve out ten minutes at the end of your practice each day to sit and focus on your breathing!

Join me on Friday, July 5th in Vancouver, for my two hour workshop: “Yogic Breathing : Getting Started.”
Type BREATHE in the comments and I’ll send you the details.

Fun fact: I lived in Victoria, BC from 2003 - 2008.

It’s where I went to a yoga studio for the first time. I started teaching there too.

I’ve been a regular visitor to since its inception back in 2009. However, this is my first time doing an official “takeover” and workshop program.

Stoked!!

See y’all there April 26-28 ☀️

There comes a point in the life of a serious yoga student, where they’re faced with a make it or break it moment…

The ones that navigate well through this decisive moment…

…Reap the rewards of reaffirming their commitment to timeless wisdom teachings, by adjusting their lifestyles into deeper alignment with a natural (though counter-cultural) daily rhythm.

The ones that fold and don’t break through…

… Sadly, stay on a path of unfulfillment and struggle, caught between their current desires and outdated habits.

It’s all too easy to fall short on this “make it or break it” moment and get stuck on a plateau: practice stalls, before entropy takes over. Then it’s a back-slide all the way down the proverbial mountain.

Understanding Ayurveda, particularly its teachings around daily routine, can be a game-changer when it comes to building and maintaining effective yoga practices and self-care routines.

By incorporating just a few of these precepts…

✅ I enjoy the immense health benefits of living each day in easeful alignment with my circadian rhythm.

✅ I have learned simple, powerful daily routines that keep me lean, strong and on-purpose

✅ I’ve helped dozens of men and women improve their health and wellbeing, by building simple habits into their daily lives

Hey, Geoff here…

I’ve maintained an early-morning yoga & teaching practice for the past 25 years

I still remember the early days, before I encountered the health-wisdom teachings of Ayurveda, and began slowly integrating them into my daily life.

Early mornings used to be brutal.
My meal schedule was all over the place.
My energy and focus were inconsistent.
I was often “forcing it” instead of finding ease.

Thankfully, over the years, I was introduced to the foundational teachings of Ayurveda (though I’m definitely no expert!)

The “101-level” prescriptions I’ve learned, and the common-sense life-science behind them, help me…

✅ enjoy the immense health benefits of living each day in alignment with my circadian rhythm.

✅ learn simple, powerful daily routines that keep me fit, strong and on-purpose

✅ support dozens of men and women to improve their health and wellbeing, by building simple practices into their daily lives

I don’t say all this to brag, but to show you that I’ve been at that point where a lot of seasoned yogis, self-healers and active yoga teachers found themselves.

And I found a workable path forward...

If I can do it (albeit imperfectly)  I know you can too!

That’s why I’m hosting a FREE Webinar where I’m inviting other seasoned yogis, self-healers and active yoga teachers to learn...

How To easily apply Ayurveda to your life … Without learning Sanskrit, changing your diet or quitting coffee!!

So if you struggle with understanding Ayurveda, applying it effectively to daily life and people you wish to help....

I’d love to have you on this call so that you can reach your next level as well!

We go LIVE on Feb 27th, 2024 between 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM…

See you there!

Why “First Light” Yoga?

Despite its more modern association with physical postures, yoga is synonymous with meditation.

Yoga and Ayurveda teach us that the best conditions conducive for meditation are found in the early morning, just before sunrise. Then, the mind is quiet and relaxed, having just rested and reset overnight, during sleep. Practice at this time is more effective.

If Yoga is the science of meditation and spiritual freedom, Ayurveda is the science of aligning daily life toward yoga practice. It provides brilliant, common-sense guidelines for how to stay healthy and oriented toward spiritual pursuits.

Something we need to adjust when beginning an early-morning yoga/meditation practice is our sleeping and eating schedules. For example, Eating too late and heavy in the evening makes achieving good sleep much more difficult. If we don’t sleep well, getting up at 5am is gonna suck!

Ayurveda asks us to work with the body’s natural tendencies. One of these is for the digestive system to be more active in the middle of the day (vs the evening). To align with this would mean having a bigger lunch and a smaller dinner. This way we can digest our meals more efficiently and be able to go to bed earlier without feeling full, or still in the digestion process.

This of course is counter to the modern lifestyle.

Tell me: do you eat your main meal at lunchtime or at night time?

What would it take to switch to having a bigger lunch and a smaller dinner?

Are you a “natural” or a “normal” human being?

Seems like its rare to find a modern human living a “natural” life these days.

More common the “normal life”: ie. urban situation, disconnected from the land that sustains you, isolated from community, lucky if your work feels “meaningful”, on clock time, etc.

We now have the bodies to go with these lifestyles too: “normal” bodies nowadays are stiff, weighed down, undernourished, used to sitting down, mostly indoors.

“Natural” bodies move freely and swiftly, adapting to the landscape rather than paving it over for ease. Natural bodies easily squat, jump, run, reach, climb, swim, carry and - perhaps most importantly - can be still.

If you’re living in a body that’s more “normal” than you’d like, practicing yoga postures can help. Simple shapes and movements, that safely explore the full range of motion of your spine and joints, can reawaken lost natural capacities.

Add conscious breathing and mental concentration to the mix, then your nervous system and mind can also rediscover their lost capacities.

Such practice probably won’t happen though, unless you make room for it in your life. But since a little bit goes such a LONG way, it’s worth carving out even just 15 minutes a day. How?

Well, thankfully, the science of yoga is accompanied by its sibling: Ayurveda (literally, “life-science”.)

Ayurveda is the health system of India and views the human being as more than just the body: you are also a mind, a soul, your senses and more.

Among many important things, it provides us with common-sense teachings on daily routines, seasonal changes and much more.

All with an underlying view that a natural life, lived in tune with our inner/outer environments, yields greater health and contentment for the human being.

I want to introduce you to this powerful wisdom. To show you how you can apply it to your life. And make small, steady changes for the better.
