When I'm preparing for a Tree Spirit Medicine workshop, I first get a "calling" from a tree that it has medicine it wishes to share with us. I then dream journey to its spirit to learn its medicine. After that, I deepen my understanding of the medicine through meditation, research, contemplation and dreaming. An important part of understanding a tree's medicine is by simply sitting with the tree and opening to what arises in me physically, emotionally, and cognitively. I also notice what shows up around me during the meditation and see if it is communication from the tree about its medicine. For example in my Sumac meditation, a redtail hawk called, so I am contemplating its medicine in relation to Sumac's and seeing what arises. The following video is my observations while meditating in our stand of Sumacs in preparation for the Sumac workshop coming up on November 22nd.

The Tree Spirit Medicine workshop with Elm is coming up this Saturday September 20th. Elm’s TSM is "Illumination from Above." In the centre of the chest, about one finger-width’s distance from the body’s midline on the right side of the chest (where we point to when we refer to ‘I’) resides the Spiritual Heart – the luminous portal between the oneness of all existence and our sense of ‘I’. The Spiritual Heart is an organ of direct knowledge, wisdom and Divine Truth. It is the intimate observer of all your thoughts, emotions, sensations. The place of deep intimacy from which arises the essential awareness of your deepest and truest self; the intuition of who you really are. It through the Spiritual Heart that Elm’s Tree Spirit Medicine of Illumination from Above flows to and through.

I first met the spirit of American Elm on July 8, 2011 while doing a plant study for Plant Spirit Medicine. In PSM, you ‘enter the dream’ in the spirit world with a plant to gather its spirit medicine. In my dream with American Elm it told me that it is a vessel which receives Divine wisdom and channels it into the Earth to share with us. Elm helps people receive Divine wisdom directly. I was shown the image of a vessel, the same beautiful vase-like shape of Elm, receiving light from above and transmitting it out:

I asked Elm how I would use this medicine because it didn’t seem to correspond with the PSM paradigm. Elm told me that it would come to me later and let me know. I thought to myself, “Is this Tree Spirit Medicine?” Earlier I had received a message from the Tree People that they would be giving me a form of medicine called Tree Spirit Medicine at some point in the future. It was many years later that the Tree People finally began to bring this medicine to me.

When I connected with the Tree Spirit Medicine of Elm, what I received was pretty much the same message I received in 2011 with further clarification. Elm medicine is about receiving illumination from above. It connects us to our Higher Self, which is our true expression beyond ego, conditioning, limiting beliefs, fears and trauma; beyond the illusion of dualism. It is that divine aspect of ourselves that holds the blueprint of our life purpose, our passion and joy.

Having conscious connection with our Higher Self enables us to remember that we are a divine spark, interconnected and one with all of Creation. It also helps us to remember that the Earth is a living spiritual being and we have an important part to play in this divine mystery.

Elm Tree Spirit Medicine workshop Saturday, September 20th.

Elm connects us to our Higher Self, our higher power – that loving, all-knowing, wise and liberated aspect of our spiritual being that provides guidance about our higher path and purpose. Our Higher Self is our true expression beyond ego, conditioning, limiting beliefs, fears and trauma; beyond the illusion of dualism. It is that divine aspect of ourselves that holds the blueprint of our life purpose, our passion and joy. Having conscious connection with our Higher Self enables us to remember that we are a divine spark, interconnected and one with all of Creation. It also helps us to remember that the Earth is a living spiritual being and we have an important part to play in this divine mystery.

In this workshop participants will directly receive Elm’s gifts of healing, wisdom and guidance by transmission through Monika. Experiences will be shared and interpreted so that we may all learn from each other the depth and breadth of Elm’s tree spirit medicine. It will be with you always whenever you need it.

From the Dream Journeying to the Plant People manual:

Your dream journey experiences always contain transformational energy and power that will open and expand you. The Tree and Plant People don’t give advice, suggestions, information, platitudes, or “shoulds.” None of which have any depth or real power.

If you receive what seems like advice from a tree or plant such as, “You need to lighten up and play more,“ it is good advice if taken at face value but it has as much depth and transformational power in it as the statement, “Wear rain boots when it’s raining to keep your feet dry.” The trees and plants do not abandon you to figure it out all on your own. “Great, I know I need to have more fun and lighten up, but now what? What am I suppose to do about it?”

What the tree and plant spirits give is medicine – i.e., something that is transformational and healing. It is always useful and can be put into practice. They show you the ‘what’ and provide you with the ‘how’ and will guide and support you to utilize what you have received. When they tell you something like, “You need to lighten up and play more,” what they are really conveying is the medicine of lightness of being and joy because you need it. It is tangible, real medicine - like drinking peppermint tea to ease indigestion. They are letting you know that you can call on them when you are feeling heavy and dark in your spirit and they will transform that heaviness into light and joy.

Resilience is the capacity to face and withstand adversity, challenges and failures of all descriptions.
