🪶The most important thing you will ever bring to a bodywork session is not a secret technique or special skill.
The most important thing you will bring is something that you already contain: your full, undivided, attention.
We all innately know how to touch and care for another being. Your own unique way of doing so is not something that anyone can teach you. Nor is it something that can be re-created by anyone else.
In the container of a Zenthai Shiatsu course, we do throw a lot of techniques at you; we give you a framework and a container to work from, and we begin guiding you into diagnostics – deeper ways to open up your senses, listen deeply, and discover what might be needed to help someone overcome difficulties or step into wholeness.
But then, ultimately, “we learn the sequence to forget the sequence”. We practice the scales in order to play a song, maybe even write our own, or tap into the freedom and wonder of improvisation. As my teacher always reminded us, we “make it all up because it’s all made up anyways”. At some point in time, all the techniques, ideas & philosophies came from someone looking deeply within themselves and discovering - then passing on that discovery.
Some of the techniques in Zenthai Shiatsu have come from thousands of years of this. And if they weren’t effective… I don’t think they would’ve made it this far. And although it is very helpful to look back and receive guidance from those that have come before us, we don’t want to lose touch with the pulse of our own beating heart. We don’t want to get stuck in dogma and forget that practices need to evolve. We don’t want to forget that we each have something beautiful and unique to offer and that we each contain within ourselves the seed of new discovery. That there isn’t someone out there who ultimately knows better than anyone else.
My prayer is that we can all receive teachings with humility, awe, and gratitude from the humans that inspire us, and that we can do so with knowledge of our own, soft empowerment; with curiosity as to what special gift we have to give back to the evolution of it all.
