World Mental health day: Acceptance and Dignity
There are all kinds of reasons why people struggle with mental health. And often times it’s not just mental, it’s emotional, spiritual, physical, financial, and relational too, among others. That’s why holistic health is so important to me.
Not just for the sake of my clients, friends, or family members, but for the sake of myself as well. This is always going to be something deeply personal because the experience of it resides within the person suffering.
But when there’s even just a little bit of trust, validation, acceptance and love, the potential to be vulnerable can arise, and thats when the support being offered just might be accepted. And it might be accepted in ways we aren’t expecting. So we have to keep our eyes open.
So what I’m going to do today is acknowledge that I see people suffering all over the place. And I see myself suffering too sometimes. And because I believe that people inherently know how to help themselves, I’m not going to make suggestions on what they can or should do- especially when they’ve likely already googled it anyway. Or they’ve watched multiple videos on the same thing and haven’t taken the advice because it just didn’t resonate.
Instead I’m going to ask people how they feel, what they think and what they need. And then I’ll ask them what they’ve done in the past that’s been helpful, and we’ll go from there. If they can’t remember, or if it isn’t possible to do, I’ll ask them to think about parallel alternatives and I’ll provide my own perspective only when I’m asked directly to do that.
This will be my contribution today. And I’ll strive to continue doing it everyday. I will accept myself and others for where they’re at, and I’ll hold a place for dignity of persons.
Special shout out to the person with the chalk. Your message made me feel good 💙
