The story of lavender moon

The name Lavender Moon arose from a journey I took up island to a herb farm in the 80’s . I was in the bookstore “Every Women’s Books” a feminist bookstore in downtown Victoria. On the bulletin board was a small ad asking for help on a herb farm. I was a feminist (grrrlpower!) and a herbalist and so I grabbed my best friend and off we went the following weekend! It was a womyn/lesbian run farm called ‘Sunshine’s Herb Farm ‘ (yes, her name was Sunshine) outside of Nanoose Bay. Our task was to plant lavender in a giant crescent moon shape in a field. (The crescent moon was part of a feminist women’s symbol and the idea was to be able to see the symbol from the air in a plane). While there, a resistance movement was happening against nuclear submarines in the area. We went into the woods and set up a teepee for the protestors. Festooned in the branches nearby were colourful ribbons and strings - apparently Starhawk had been there with the protestors, and had done a ritual right before we had arrived. So Lavender Moon was named for this transformative journey to Sunshine’s herb farm, for the ‘lavender menace’ of feminism, for Starhawk and ritual protests, and for grrrl power and all that the moon represents for women.
