Autumn nourishment from the squash family

Members of the squash family (Cucurbita), pumpkins and their kin are some of nature’s most generous autumn allies. While all pumpkins are technically squashes, not all squashes are pumpkins—but they share a lineage of nourishment and warmth that makes them perfect for this time of year.

Beneath their tough rinds lies a wealth of nutrition: Beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, all working together to strengthen immunity, soothe digestion, and bring a glow to tired skin and spirits.

Herbal & Nutritional Benefits:

• Rich in beta-carotene → supports immune function, vision, and skin health

• High in fiber → balances blood sugar and supports gut flora

• Energetically warming and grounding, ideal for those who feel depleted or cold

• Their seeds provide zinc and magnesium → helpful for stress, sleep, and hormone balance

• Anti-inflammatory compounds ease joint and muscle pain

• Potassium-rich → supports hydration and heart health

• B vitamins & minerals help lift low moods during darker months

Ways to enjoy them:

• Stir roasted squash into oatmeal or warm salads

• Blend pumpkin purée into soups, sauces, or smoothies

• Bake into muffins or breads for a nutrient-rich treat

• Roast cubes with herbs like sage or thyme for an earthy side

• Toast pumpkin seeds with sea salt and spices for a healthy snack

We encourage everyone to stop by the Luxton Fairgrounds in Langford, B.C., this weekend. The annual fall fair is happening, and the Lily of the Forest team is represented amongst the exhibits! 😊

It's a great chance to see what local growers, bakers, artists and artisans are coming out with, and to see historical exhibits and demonstrations. See you there!

Forget candlelight dinners. This is what successful matchmaking looks like in the plant world. Pollination is one of Nature's most important love stories, and without it, we wouldn’t have much on our plates (actually, we wouldn't even be at the table). Cue the smooth jazz. 😎

Lily says these flowers smell like sunshine! 😉

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been studied for centuries and continues to intrigue modern science. Clinical research shows it may:

• Support mood balance in cases of mild to moderate depression.

• Aid in nerve regeneration after minor injury.

• Reduce certain types of inflammation, both internally and on the skin.

• Contain compounds (like hypericin and hyperforin) that influence neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine.

While it’s a valuable herb, it can interact with many medications, so it should be used under professional guidance.

Tangled thoughts keeping you up at night?

Meet passionflower, a wild, spiraling vine that mirrors the chaos of an overworked mind, then gently unwinds it.

In my latest article, I explore how this calming herb has earned its place in the herbalist’s toolkit, as an ally for anxious tension, sleepless nights, and the wired-but-tired state so many of us know too well.

Learn about its traditional uses, energetic profile, and when to reach for passionflower.

This post is dedicated to Mona MacDonald, who grew this particular flower. Sending that lady all the light in the Universe tonight.

Feverfew is powerful medicine, but it can be a little harsh on the mouth when eaten fresh. One traditional way to work around that? Feverfew leaf sandwiches. 🍞🌿

Tucking the leaves between slices of bread not only helps mask the bitter taste and reduces mouth irritation, but it also delivers the herb in a simple, familiar way.

Just remember, a little goes a long way, and it's best to always consult with a qualified practitioner before using herbal remedies, especially if you take other medications or have underlying conditions. Feverfew is not recommended for use if you are pregnant or nursing.

Have you ever tried fresh herbal sandwiches?

Two years ago today, we brought Luna home. My wild little moonbeam, my superhero, my heart in a harness.

I strongly encourage everyone to support Jesse and his team at . Words can't properly convey how much light they brought into my life the day they brought us Luna, and I'll always be grateful to them and her foster mom, Jeannie.

As an herbalist, I believe healing comes in many forms—sometimes it's a tea or tincture, and sometimes, it's a rescue pup who reminds you how to play, live big, be patient and love unconditionally. Luna brings out the best in us.

Here’s to growth, healing, and living our happiest lives. Happy Gotcha Day to my bestie.

Ladybugs aren’t just cute—they’re fierce defenders of your plants. A single ladybug can eat up to 5,000 aphids in its lifetime, along with other soft-bodied pests like mites and whiteflies.

Welcoming ladybugs into your garden means fewer pesticides, healthier plants, and a more balanced ecosystem.

Want to attract them?

Plant dill, fennel, or yarrow

Provide shallow water dishes with pebbles

Avoid using chemical sprays

Let nature do the work!

(And don't mistake native ladybugs for the invasive Asian lady beetles!)

Here's a little sneak peek into what I'm working on! As a consult-based practitioner, I don't normally sell products, but I'm going to be putting together mini care kits for various purposes. If you are in the wellness world and want to collaborate, hit me up. I would love to include items from other Canadian companies - with permission and your business cards, of course! It might help us reach the people who need us right now.

Quick message from Luna and I: This Earth Day, we stand in gratitude for the soil beneath our feet, the plants that heal, and the wild places where we find peace.

We each have a part to play in protecting this sacred ground. Whether it’s planting, learning, speaking up, or simply walking gently, we can always choose reciprocity.

May we honour Nature every day.
