Child’s Pose (Balasana) is a resting pose that stretches the lower back, hips, thighs, knees, and ankles inducing a release of tension in the mind and body. This shape provides an opportunity to refocus and understand the need to take time for yourself.

1. Kneel on the floor, knees together, or wide apart. Big toes together, if this feels right for you.
2. Sit up tall, take a nice big inhale, reaching up out of your pelvis and as you exhale fold forward bringing your forehead towards the floor. Land on a pillow, bolster, blanket or mat.
3. Arms stretch out in front of you, spreading fingers, ground into your mat.
4. Bring your awareness to your breath, evening out your inhales and exhales
5. Stay here for 30 seconds up to 5 minutes, being mindful of all sensations in the body.
6. To release the pose, exit how you entered. As you inhale start to creep your fingers back to sitting upright position, inhale as you sit up tall, and as you exhale, straighten knees into downward dog position, eventually making your way back to the front of the mat.

**If you have difficulty sitting on your heels in this pose, place a thickly folded blanket between your back thighs and calves. Avoid if you have a knee and if pregnant, spread your knees wide, for a wide leg child’s pose.

Take a moment. Release anything that no longer feels good for you to carry. Breath. Connect. Release.

I am so grateful for the practice of yoga and meditation. It has helped me navigate dark corners and directed me back to the light time and time again. DM if I can provide any support.

So, what is a 'mantra' exactly? The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit words manas meaning 'mind' and tra meaning 'tool or instrument'. As such, mantras are literally a tool or instrument for the mind. It can be a word, sound or phrase. Some know them as to be positive affirmations. Either way, the magic starts to happen when we recite repeatedly inwards to access higher states of consciousness, harness the power of our intentions and even manifest positive affirmations. Every time our attention goes outward, we use our 'tool' to gently bring our awareness back inward.

Why not give it a go?

When going into this practice, try your best to not force or control the mantra. If you find your thoughts wandering (& they will! this is just part of he practice) just keep gently bringing your awareness back to your mantra.

1.Take a moment to find a comfortable position, seated or lying down. If it feels right for you, close your eyes.
2. Start to bring your awareness to your breath. Just notice where it sits on the inhale, and exhale.
3. Now take a few nice deep breaths to release any tension, returning back to your natural rhythm of breath. Repeat this step until you feel settled and ready to begin.
4. Start to repeat your mantra. Gently bringing yourself back to the mantra when thoughts wander. You can drop or add a word, just do what feels right.
5. Continue for 5 mins.
6. Gently release the mantra, bringing your awareness back to your breath.
7. Take a moment to notice how your mind and body have begun to settle.
8. Start to move awareness outward by moving fingers, toes and when ready, open your eyes.

I would love to know if you tried todays mantra!? Drop me a comment telling me how it went!
If you already incorporate mantras into your practice, what words of inspiration can you lend to others starting out?
