🟢 Q & A Wednesday 🟢

"What is the weirdest injury you've treated?" 🤔

The strangest injury I have treated was a tooth in a forearm during a basketball game. Let's just say a player went for a layup, elbows another in the face by accident and ended up with a tooth in their arm.

Luckily, it was a 'baby' tooth, so they didn't have to worry about getting it replaced.

🔴 Muscle Monday - Soleus 🔴

🔺Soleus is one of your calf muscles. It attaches from just below the back of the knee down to the Achilles tendon.

🔺It is sometimes missed in stretching routines because it sits behind the Gastrocnemius muscle (the big teardrop muscle in the calf).

🔺To stretch it, you have to bend your knee while doing a calf stretch.

🟩 Fun Fact!
The calf muscles work as a pump to compress the deep veins when contracting and forcing blood up towards the heart. This is part of why using under desk bikes and doing ankle pumping can help with swelling in the ankles and calves.

Unlike a broken arm or torn ACL, a concussion is often invisible. Its symptoms may be hard to see, but are very real to those who experience them.

Confusion, memory issues, irritability and sleep disturbances are all symptoms associated with concussion. But they can be subtle and easily mistaken for something else, leaving affected individuals to feel misunderstood or dismissed.

Because diagnosis relies on honesty and self-reporting, open communication is critical to receiving and delivering proper care.

This Concussion Awareness Week, let’s commit to Seeing the Unseen by recognizing symptoms, supporting recovery and changing the way we talk about concussions.

Muscle strains are a very common injury. Many times we don't even seek treatment for this injury.

A muscle strain is a tear in the muscle. It can be minor (which is very common) or it can be a major tear. Many times a tear happens when the muscle is over stretched. Think about a hair tie. It has a bit of stretch to it but will eventually fail if it is overstretched or worn. It is considered minor when only a few fibres of muscle are torn. Sometimes this only causes pain for a day or two. The more major strains are up to 90% torn fibres or full tears through the muscle. These can have symptoms like swelling, bruising, and weakness.

With all muscle strains, RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) is the best treatment to start with. This helps control the amount of inflammation and swelling as well as pain.

All levels of strains also require proper treatment before going back to work or play. Even the most minor strain can become worse and reoccur if you go back too early.

🟢 Q & A Wednesday! 🟢

"Where are you from?" 🤷‍♀️

I am from Wingham, Ontario.

I am happy to live and work so close to my home town. I knew quickly during college that I didn't want to stay in the city for work. It sometimes messes people up when I call and a Wingham phone number comes up on their caller ID. I have had the same number since I got my first cell phone.

🟢 Q & A Wednesday! 🟢

"Why do you charge the full fee for late cancellations or no shows?" 🤷‍♀️

When it comes to late cancellations or no shows, I try to be fair and understanding. I know that life happens sometimes. I don't charge for sickness or weather related cancellations. Once in while, I can absorb the loss in a day but when it occurs frequently it means I can't pay my bills.

In this profession, I don't get paid an hourly rate. I get paid depending on who I see that day. I have done the math on how many I can safely treat while still paying my clinic bills and my house bills. You may think that it is just one person cancelling that day so it shouldn't be an issue, but you'd be surprised how often it comes in clusters. Take the last week of summer for example. It was fully booked and in a span of a couple days, I had 5 people cancel for various reasons. That is a whole day worth of appointments that were cancelled. A whole day of work cancelled.

Please try to give me 24 hours so that I can try to fill the space.

You may see this new tool at the clinic at your next appointment. The IASTM Blades are a perfect way to help treat your injuries, tightness and pain while saving my hands in the process.

Depending on your treatment plan, I may introduce this tool to you at your next appointment. It is a great way to decrease pain and improve range of motion by stimulating the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, fascia) to create a cellular response. This brings in cells needed for healing while also breaking down scar tissue.

It may be called a "blade" or "scraping tool" but it is actually more blunt than you may think. You're welcome to hold them yourself while we talk about if you're comfortable with them being used in your treatment plan.

“I’ll Come to You”

I have had the passion to help people for as long as I can remember. As an Athletic Therapist, I strive to help everyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors to industrial workers. No injury is too small. I treat all musculoskeletal injuries (muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints) so that you can get back to the life you love to live. I am also trained in the rehabilitation and return to activity after sustaining a concussion.

I started this business in particular after noticing many people who cannot make it to an appointment because they don’t have a vehicle, work till 6, or can’t get a babysitter. Those should not hold anyone back from getting the treatment they deserve.
