Look what I found in my wildflower garden! Methinks it will be my lunch today after getting some more gardening done. We’re officially two weeks from planting up here in the highlands. I have lots of calendula officinalis, echinacea purpurea and monarda fistulosa growing under lights to paint into my garden canvas. Can’t wait to see the whole picture in bloom. Sending Spring blessings to all today.

Roasted chestnut, apple and sage stuffing for our Thanksgiving turkey. This recipe was my mother’s and my children make me quadruple the recipe every year so they can take it back to college and/or have leftovers. As a mum, this makes my heart happy! ❤️

Solstice Blessings

Just getting my table ready for our big feast tomorrow and I am marvelling in how far we have come since last year.

While we are still not completely settled in the way that I want and hope to be, we have achieved stability in autonomy, and that is a huge piece—a foundation to build upon and I cannot sufficiently express my deep gratitude for this feeling of relief resulting in the ability to let go of doubt and fear.

Change is hard!!! But tomorrow is a blessed day of indulgence and gratitude for reaching new milestones along this pathway.

Sending many wishes of Yuletide blessings to all my family and friends, near and far…

WE’VE GOT BABIES!!!
Having fun experimenting with seed germination in the mountains. I thought I’d get some early seeds started for my big pots that I can take outside after the frost for a good head start to an early harvest. Got more babies than I expected so I had to girly-rig my grow box to accommodate them all but it seems to be working really well so far. I’ll start my seeds for the ground beds soon and hope for an abundant new batch of wee babes that I can swap or give away (feels so good to do this!—I derive great pleasure and pride from sharing my plant babies).

Spring is officially just around the corner! Bring it! And Happy Planting Season to you all!

ECLECTIC TAPAS
What does a mum do when she moves her kids to the rural Highlands and there is no McDonalds—or any fast food chains at all for that matter! Luckily, we do have a gourmet cheese and charcuterie shop nearby with loads of imported and local treasures, including Fuet from Spain, (made from the Black Iberian Pig) So I improvised the new McDonalds at our house: eclectic Tapas! It includes hot chimichurri, Brazilian pepper mayo and oh yes, Ines Rosales tortillas. Don’t forget the Irish Porter cheddar, English Wensleydale with Blueberries and Black Truffle and wild mushroom crackers! Oh yum!

In the summer I will definitely get some wild boar, elk and venison steaks to throw on the Hibachi.

And it would seem that neither of my kids is missing Mickey D’s at all!!! Me neither!!! Bring it! Bon appetit!

GRATITUDE
This was our first Christmas in our new homestead and I learned so much. Had to do my shopping around the weather forecast so that I could safely drive to civilization and back. Had to start way earlier than expected. Had to improvise Christmas food storage without a freezer. Had to accept help in clearing snow because I just can’t handle the volume on my own without the right tools. But the lesson I learned was to appreciate what I do have even more. Without darkness there can be no light, right? As I look out my back window at the 3-foot high trench carved from my back door to my car, I am reminded that despite the stresses that life throws at us, there is still beauty all around us. I suddenly felt grateful that I made it through the Christmas pressures and that I looked out my window in the exact moment to witness the light poking it’s way through the dark clouds. I don’t have to cook tonight because I have turkey feast leftovers that the kids can help themselves to at their own pace. For the first time in weeks there is no prep to do and the household chores can wait! Time to treat myself to a glass of wine and take pleasure in doing nothing but admiring the beauty and enjoying the bliss of just spending time on me. Sending many blessings to all today. May life give you many reasons to feel grateful too!

Winter greetings to all from our forest homestead in the Kawartha Highlands. It took me 2 hours to dig the house out this morning but still no regrets. Looking forward to exploring the forest trails and venturing down to the water to soak in the view. Sending Winter blessings to all…

CHICKEN, MUSHROOM & TARRAGON RISOTTO WITH AMONTILLADO
The ultimate labour-of-love comfort food! And it gives me great bliss to know that this is a precursor of what is to come after I inoculate my forest with Oysters and Sh*takes and Hens! Oh what amazing perfection it will be to make this dish with my own wild mushrooms! There is much to be thankful for as I anticipate realizing so many dreams here on my homestead. Sending many blessings where they are needed. Bon appetit y Buen Provecho! 💕

PATACONES ECUATORIANOS
I was very surprised to find green plantain here in the sticks and thought it would be a nice treat, especially because winter has come early. My husband was from Ecuador and made them frequently for us back in the day. Hopefully he would be proud of my effort?

What is your comfort food when you need to treat your soul?

FIRST SNOWFALL IN THE HIGHLANDS ❤️

Great news! My electric snowblower works!!! Not so great news, someone broke into my garage and stole my power cords (among other things)😔

But I choose not to be a victim so I counted my blessings and got on with it, and I am glad that I did, because it is absolutely magical out there!

Wireless cams installed in my garage now and looking forward to greater connection with this land as I learn to respect the seasons here. Blessings to all today…

Our Story

It took us 2 years to get licensed by Health Canada, as we had to prove with modern published medical studies done on human subjects (studies on rats, primates or in vitro were not acceptable) that all of the herbs in all of our formulations are both safe and effective by modern standards and have a long history of use. Having licenses means that we have to use herbs that have been lab-tested for chemical and microbial contaminants (and are non-GMO), have our products tested for said contaminants and that we have to follow very strict manufacturing regulations and processes of sanitation, production, labelling and record-keeping. As well, the medicinal concentrations in our formulations have been calculated to conform to safe dosing standards--again based on published research. When you look online and see ointments that have been made with herbs but are unlicensed, just know that there has been no research done for modern safety and efficacy nor is there even a medicinal concentration listed, or any research done on adverse effects or drug/pharma interactions. We are passionate about making medicines--our goal and our sincere desire is to help people heal, and not to harm them. As such, we feel that the additional expenses of having licenses from Health Canada for our formulations is worth it, and we hope they will help to give you assurance about their safety and effectiveness.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to offer an effective and natural alternative to pharmaceutical medicines and/or mass-produced medicines (that contain alcohol and chemical additives/preservatives) for self-care (treating minor injuries and ailments). We spent two years getting our formulations licensed by Health Canada to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our products (when used according to directions) and also the safety of the manufacturing process. Herbal Medicine is our passion (both from traditional and scientific points of view) and our goal is to provide alternative self-care formulations for people who are conscious of the chemicals they expose themselves to and who want to benefit from traditional remedies that have a very long history of use. Because we are passionate about plant medicines, we are also an environmentally-conscious company that believes in Conservation from a grass-roots, local level to a national level. We hope to appeal to people who care deeply about our planet's health in relation to their own.
