Literacy is a really hot topic in the field of childcare development right now. Parents will often come to me saying that their child is behind in reading but it is so hard to catch them up since they don't like it. Honestly, I don't think any of us like doing things we don't feel we're good at.
The great thing about reading is that there are so many choices! Think about what topics might interest your child the most and look for material related to this. We also don't all have to read massive chapter books. Comic books, news articles, even reading food labels counts!
A wonderful early literacy strategy to get your child interested in literacy is to talk about letters you see around you (food/toy/game labels, signs, etc.), sound words out together, and provide children with the opportunity to read material related to their interests without pressure. Not every kid is going to love reading, but when we let them get curious about the words around them and when we are included in that process with them, it can help to increase their motivation and provide an opportunity for openness and interest around reading.
