Milking the Painted Cow

“Over time [SSRC] has developed its own way of practicing, its own path. The heart of this path is work.
For students of Dharma ready to study the operation of Samsara and challenge the patterns of illusion mind, work reveals the mind in action. At first students may think of their jobs simply in terms of producing results, but as they cope with the challenges that work involves – time pressure, lack of knowledge, frustration, negative emotions – students begin to develop the clear sense that they are on a path. The discipline of getting up early, working late, and staying focused throughout the day lets them watch the rhythms of the mind, day in and day out. Working with mindfulness and a strong focus on doing their best, investigating through their work who they are and how their minds function, they are following the path of inquiry laid down in the ancient Sūtras and Śāstras. Without emphasizing formal study, initiations, or ceremonies, they are connecting with the lineage of realization.
By responding to the challenge of producing results, students learn that the mind can be changed. Using their hands and heads, they see what it is like to discipline the mind and to care. They see how commitment turns frustration into patience; how concentration turns confusion into clarity. Focused on action and on being productive, they can confront emotional ups and downs, challenge unwanted patterns, and develop endurance, flexibility, and stability. Those who enter [SSRC] start for personal reasons, but those who stay develop a love for this way of working and the way of life it supports.”
