Today, the Q***r and Trans Graduate Student Group at University of Manitoba held their third annual Lavender Graduation. This ceremony celebrates q***r and trans university graduates from all across Manitoba as they complete their studies. Trans Manitoba would like to extend a warm congratulations to all Lavender Graduates!

Lavender graduations are a special, historical time of coming together for q***r individuals. From the Q***r and Trans Graduate Student Group: "The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish Le***an, who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her biological children because of her sexual orientation".

Thank you to the organizers of this year's Lavender Graduation, and happy grad to all of those who got to walk today!

ID: A post congratulating 2026 Lavender Graduates. The background of the image is a field of lavender flowers. A light purple rectangle is overlaid on top, with a black graduation cap with a purple tassel hanging off the corner. Text in the rectangle says “Congratulations Lavender Graduates! The University of Manitoba’s Q***r and Trans Graduate Student Group held its third annual Lavender Graduation today. Trans Manitoba extends a warm congratulations to all 2026 Lavender Graduates!” The Trans Manitoba logo, edited to be light purple instead of blue, is in the bottom left corner of the image. End ID.

🏳️‍🌈Leave No One Behind: Equality, Freedom and Justice for All🏳️‍⚧️

I’ve been thinking about what I’d like to say today, this important day for q***r folks. An important day for the world. As a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, my personal experience growing up was in an environment—particularly at school—where it was not okay to be gay. It was not okay to be “other”. Something was wrong with you if you weren’t “normal”. If you strayed from cis-gendered heteronormative behaviours, you were mocked, teased, ridiculed, bullied, and even hated. Hated by your peers, hated by adults.

Even though these harmful behaviours weren’t present within my family, I still internalized that homophobia. I told myself that it wasn’t okay. I told myself to be “normal”. I told myself that I was straight. But sexual orientation isn’t something that can just be chosen. Same with gender. It just “is”.

I hear about 2SLGBTQIA+ teenagers today who are accepted by their peers. Who are protected by their teachers and school administrators. Who are protected by adults within the community, some of whom are also q***r, and many as allies. It brings tears to my eyes to see this growth, and to know that the youth today experience less hate and more love.

But notice that I said ‘less hate’, because there’s still a very long way to go. We are not out of the woods, yet. There are still 2SLGBTQIA+ youth who are suffering—particularly trans youth. And despite all of the growth, hate still remains.

Our trans, 2-Spirit, and non-binary community members still face an extreme amount of “in your face” hate. The kind of hate that prohibits healthy day-to-day living. Where finding jobs and housing is difficult. Where taking a simple ride on a city bus becomes a nightmare. Where walking outside becomes dangerous. Where youth cannot be themselves at home because they’ll be kicked out.

Today I ask that you reflect on how you have stood up to protect q***r and gender diverse folks. Ask yourself, “what can I do better?”. Because at the end of the day, it will take a concerted effort from everyone to eliminate hate.

Did you know that today (December 21st) is the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The so nicely puts it that, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The winter solstice is an opportunity for Indigenous people to reconnect to the natural world, sharpen our senses, and access our most powerful selves.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So we would like to take this opportunity to amplify their amazing words: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“On this day, the sun is at its lowest point in the sky, traveling across the sky world above us in a short stride, resulting in the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. For Indigenous people across the globe, the natural world is a source of teachings about natural and universal laws. In understanding the interconnectedness of all things, we recognize that the cosmos– the sun, moon, stars, and other planets– affect us and connect us in undeniable ways.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The winter solstice is an event that has been observed for millenia by many of our Indigenous ancestors. While some Tribal Nations have traditionally held special ceremonies during celestial events like the winter and summer solstices, others may have simpler ways of observing these moments. Some Tribal Nations have maintained teachings around solstice time, while others may be seeking to revive the teachings, practices and ceremonies that were forcibly taken from us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In its period of darkness, the winter solstice is an opportunity to go inward with deep intention, to care for our spiritual selves, our bodies and minds, our loved ones and families, and to prepare for the longer days ahead.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy winter solstice to all of our friends! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How to Respond to a Potential Overdose with ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Attempt to wake the person up by saying their name and/or tapping their shoulder. If they are not waking up…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Open the ampule and prepare syringe. Use the needle to draw up all the Narcan (1 ml). Push any air that may be at the top of the syringe out.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Inject into the meaty part of the upper arm, thigh, or butt. Inject needle quickly at a 90-degree angle. Inject all liquid.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Narcan takes effect within 3-5 minutes. If the person doesn’t wake up, you can inject them with more Narcan (until you run out – it will not cause harm).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• When the person wakes up, they may experience withdrawal symptoms. Stay with the person.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Remember, Narcan may wear off before the overdose does (meaning the person could return to an overdosed state). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can continue to give NARCAN if you have it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hi! I'm Leah (she/her) and I'm the Leadership and Mediation Officer and Interim Chairperson with RCR.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👩‍⚖️ I work as a lawyer for a community-focused law firm. I have been searching for additional ways to serve the community outside of my job and found out about RCR (thanks Tanya!). I'm beyond thrilled to be a part of the RCR team. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🏕 In my free time, I love camping, reading British crime novels (with a big, ceramic mug of chai) and listening to audio dramas while working in the yard.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
