I don't study modalities. I study physiology, neurology, psychology, kinesiology, physics, chemistry, and other sciences in the context of how they apply to massage therapy. I study patterns of application and how those are marketed, sometimes inaccurately, sometimes with great integrity. Instead of one mindset with a lot of different tools, I've learned to think in a variety of ways, using a broad understanding of relevant information to inform how I interact with the people who come to me for help. I prefer to think of this as a process of growing a mental garden. I can plant new things without disturbing what is already there, or I may do some pruning or even tilling. I must tend it every day, and continuously look for new ways to fertilize, water, and improve it. It is always in a state of flux, with some things thriving as others wither. Now, my tools are no longer modalities, but rather logic, critical thinking, informed clinical reasoning, observation, communication, study, research literacy, practice, and humor. Those tools should never be put away in a box.

Much of what we call illness is your body doing what it has always done:
Clearing.
Storing.
Adapting.
Slowing down.
Signaling.
You have felt these responses your entire life. The difference now is volume.
When nutrient reserves are low, when toxin and pathogen load is high, when stress is constant and recovery is absent, the body does not stop responding. It responds louder.
Think about a motor without enough oil.
It still runs.
It still protects itself.
But it gets louder so you notice.
That is not failure.
That is feedback.
Your body is not malfunctioning.
Your body is not broken.
Your body is not failing.
Your body is fighting.
It has been fighting for you your entire life.

Years ago, my friend and mentor was quoted as saying, "How big of a check are you willing to write to change your life"?... Well, its 2026 and I see 30, 40 and 50 year olds where this no longer applys, rather it should say, "How big of a check are you willing to write to SAVE your Life"! 400lbs, 500lbs, 600lbs, 28 medications, c-pap machines, blood pressure monitors, yet they think we're Nutz for asking. Imagine, changing up JUST 3 or 4 things and exchanging it with 3 or 4 OTHER simple inexpensive things..... Meet Your Quadratus Lumborum (QL). Ever heard of it, maybe not?

This powerful deep core muscle works hard for you every single day!

Where is the QL?
It is in the lower back on each side of the spine. It connects the ribs to the pelvis. It is a key stabilizer for almost every movement of the body.

What does it do?
• Helps w/ standing upright & maintains good posture
• Bends you sideways
• Lifts & hikes your hip up, (steping up onto a curb)
• Supports & stabilizes the pelvis & lumbar spine while walking

When the QL is tight or weak, what happens?
• Lower back pain
• Causes the hips to lift or tilt
• Uneven leg length
• SI joint discomfort
• Pain that wraps around the hip or travels up the back
• Difficult to stand or walk for long periods of time

What aggravates the QL?
*Prolonged sitting
