Amanda Sobey

Amanda Sobey This is my personal blog of tips and information on how I overcame my struggles with Lymphedema. Along my journey, I became a mother in 2005 and again in 2007.

Since 2002, I have been battling an incurable illness known as Lymphedema. Lymphedema is caused by a blockage of the lymphatic system, resulting in permanent swelling in my entire right leg. At the time of diagnosis, little information was known about treating this condition. The resources to maintain the condition were expensive and did not provide a viable solution. Not only was I permanently disfigured; I was traumatized to learn that there was nothing I could do about it. Becoming a mother has become my greatest accomplishment. That being said, trying to take care of others is challenging enough, not to mention the added demands of having a chronic illness. Staying active, eating healthy and making healthy lifestyle choices is something I strive for on a daily basis. As a busy mother that works full time, it is not always easy to stay committed to my regime. Through my own personal trials and tribulations, I have managed to significantly reduce my edema to the point that it is almost a thing of my past. I catch myself saying “if I knew then, what I know now” it would have saved me years of grief, pain and suffering. I am happy to share my tips and tricks for living with Lymphedema on a budget. I have created a simple step-by-step guideline that will help any person battling Lymphedema. If you have a comment, question or suggestion, I’d love to hear from you! Alright guys... Here is the tea 🫖 Some of you know me as a bodybuilder, lymphie queen, coach, influencer, motivator etc. Other people have other opinions of me. 🙃 Such is life. I can honestly say the past few years have been the HARDEST I have ever experienced. They affected me in every way possible and had MASSIVE ramifications. Healing is HARD. I needed help and still need help. Hurt people, hurt people and I am working on healing every day. I am grateful for the hardships I went through, as they taught me a lot. Life is hard and has a way of teaching and healing you... If you let it. 💕

Without going into too much detail, I'm going to remove my mask and share with you where I am at right now. Today, I choose to look at my life as an empty canvas. I am going to create the future I want. I am using today's post as my journal entry to look back on a year from now. I want to see how much I can grow, change and heal. I will take time to paint my "canvas" and create a vision for the goals, habits, values, and intentions that I will consistently work on this year.

I cannot wait to see how much my relationship with myself, my life (family & friends), my health, and my mindset can change in 365 days.

So here is to the 2nd day of January. 🥂

🌟 One day or day one. You decide. - Paulo Coelho. 🌟

Happy January 1st everyone!! I ABSOLUTELY love this quote. Simply switching around the words, this sentence has an entirely different meaning. Seems rather fitting for the first day of the year. 😉

I know it sounds rather cliché, but it is true; it doesn't matter when you start, you have to decide to take that first step. Not sure where to start? Like and follow my page to stay up to date, as I show you step-by-step how I changed my life.

✨ Post-Holiday Reset for Lymphedema ✨
The holidays can be joyful—but they can also be tough on our lymphatic systems. If you’re feeling more swelling, heaviness, or fatigue, you’re not alone. 💙

This is your gentle reset reminder... Start with compassion, then try:
✔️ Return to your daytime/nighttime compression routine
✔️ Hydrate well and reduce sodium
✔️ Eat clean anti-inflammatory foods
✔️ Ease back into movement (swimming, walking, stretching, lymph-friendly exercise)
✔️ Prioritize skin care and rest
✔️ Perform self-MLD or book manual lymphatic drainage with your therapist
✔️ Elevate your lymphie limb

Progress doesn’t require perfection. Small, consistent steps help your body recover and recalibrate. 🌱
Be kind to yourself—your lymphatic system is doing its best.

💬 Tell me.... What is one reset habit you’re starting this week?
📌 Save this for later as a gentle reminder that every day is a new day to start again. ❤️

Morning Routine Tips
☀️ 3 things that help reduce swelling in the morning

1. Stretch & Move 🧘‍♀️ - Having a dog really helps to get me moving in the morning. Every morning, the first thing I do before anything else is walk the dog as she has to go outside. No matter what... Rain or shine... I am start my day by moving my lymph.

2. Don on my daytime compression garments 🧦

3. Drink lemon ginger turmeric tea 🫖
1 cup boiling hot water
0.5" freshly grated ginger
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp tumeric (you can use fresh)
Black Pepper

10 Things I Wish I Knew Sooner About Lymphedema

1. It’s not “just swelling.” Swelling can change over time, affect mobility, and impact daily life in ways that aren’t always visible to others.
2. It's not TOO late to start managing your condition TODAY!! The sooner lymphedema is recognized and managed, the easier it is to control. Waiting can allow swelling and tissue changes to become harder to treat. I was at a stage 3 before I took action and I completely changed my condition.
3. Compression isn’t optional—but it’s not one-size-fits-all. 😉 Compression garments can be uncomfortable at first (see yesterday's post), but they can make a huge difference.
4. Skin care is a big deal. Small cuts, bug bites, or dry skin can lead to infections. Dry brushing, massage, clean garments and moisturizing can help prevent complications.
5. Exercise helps, not hurts (when done correctly 💪). Movement supports lymph flow. With guidance, strength training and light cardio can actually reduce symptoms rather than make them worse. Feel free to book a free session with me! Link in bio!
6. Flare-ups can happen—even if you’re doing everything right. Heat, illness, stress, or travel can trigger swelling. A flare-up isn’t a failure; it’s part of living with a chronic condition.
7. It affects mental and emotional health too! Depression, body image, frustration, and feeling misunderstood are common. Don't be afraid to reach out for help!
8. You have to advocate for yourself. Not all healthcare providers are well-trained in lymphedema. Ask questions, seek specialists, and push for proper care!!!
9. You’re not alone—even when it feels like it. 🤗 Lymphedema is more common than many people realize, but it’s rarely talked about. Find others who understand.
10. Life doesn’t stop—it just changes. Lymphedema requires adjustments, but it doesn’t define who you are. Continue to pursue goals, sports, creativity, and joy. 💕
