What a great initiative to see in our region! People living with addictions and mental health concerns often need support - not punishment! By addressing medical needs with medical professionals, we’re one step closer to de-stigmatizing and de-criminalizing mental health struggles.

LONDON POLICE SERVICE AND LONDON HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE ROLL OUT THE NEW NURSE POLICE RESPONSE TEAM

LONDON, ON (September 10, 2025) – The London Police Service (LPS), working in collaboration with London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), is excited to announce the creation of the Nurse Police Response Team (NPRT-RN).

On Friday, July 11, 2025, registered nurses joined members of the LPS Uniformed Division while they patrolled areas of the city, including the Downtown, Midtown and Old East Village.

These teams will address calls for service related to mental health and substance use. The program's goal is to redirect individuals from the criminal justice system and hospital emergency departments by providing proactive healthcare and supportive services.

"This partnership reflects our commitment to innovation in policing. By pairing nurses with frontline officers, we are bringing health care directly to the people who need it most. It is about building trust, improving safety, and advancing our shared goal of a healthy, vibrant core in the City of London,” said Chief Thai Truong.

“Through this model we shift our front door into the community, with a focus on underserved communities, to extend care services beyond our physical walls and meet people where they are,” says Deborah Wiseman, Vice President, Medicine, Emergency Services, Critical Care, Clinical Neurological Sciences & Corporate Nursing Executive at LHSC. “This is filling an important gap where we can not only reduce avoidable visits to our emergency departments, but we can also improve overall health outcomes for members of our community who, for many reasons, may have difficulty accessing stable health resources.”

“This is a great example of the innovation and forward-thinking that has been emblematic of the London Police Service and London Health Sciences Centre,” said Mayor Josh Morgan. “It will ease the burden on our hospitals by bringing on-site medical expertise directly to those who need it, along with vital support to officers when working with our most vulnerable citizens.”

During the project period, which expanded from two days a week to seven days a week, the team responded to 148 calls for service, directly interacting with 165 patients. Of these, 47 were medical assistance calls, 85 patients received wound care, and in 3 cases Narcan was administered to individuals experiencing an overdose.

Throughout the project 72 patients received general education, and resources were provided to them.

Stay tuned to our social media channels in the coming weeks for a video giving an inside look of the Nurse Police Response Team in action.

This is something that comes up on Psychotherapy SO OFTEN. As therapists, we aren’t just here to listen - we are also here to support you in self advocacy, and to step up as an additional advocate when you face challenges in healthcare. We are here to truly, deeply hear you when you say “this doesn’t feel normal”. We are here to help you brainstorm avenues to have your needs met, and taken seriously.

Additional reminder while we celebrate Pride month in June: anyone with a uterus and ovaries can experience concerns such as PCOS, endometriosis, vaginismus, hormone imbalances, and other reproductive concerns! These concerns transcend age, culture, and cis-ness - however marginalized individuals are less likely to be believed and treated appropriately for their reproductive health needs.

Hello, medical system: please kindly consider ending reproductive injustice and discrimination? Please and thanks 🙂

An effort as small and simple as paying attention to someone’s pronouns could help them stay on this earth! Every person can be a hero if we take the time to respect our peers - even if you don’t personally understand why their pronouns changed!

Respecting a person's pronouns is su***de prevention.

Are your teens in that weird life-space where they’re figuring out relationships, friendships, love, and feeling a bit iffy about it all?

Julia is a colleague of mine who specializes in healthy relationships and communication, and making the exploration of that stuff FUN! She is running a camp for teens to support them in building healthy relationships (friendships and otherwise!), setting boundaries, and addressing some of the unhealthy stuff that teens are bombarded with these days!

Check it out, and message Julia directly for more information :)

I know it’s only March, but it’s never too early to start thinking about plans for the summer! One of my amazing colleagues, Ask Auntie Julia is the coordinator of this super cool camp where teens can learn about healthy relationships, boundaries, communication, and taking good care of themselves!

As a teen, I would have loved this! Conversations about relationships just weren’t meant to happen with your (super uncomfortable) phys-ed teacher while sitting on the floor of the school gym!

If you have questions, I’m sure Julia would be thrilled to help you learn more about her vision and plans!

Our Great Book Roundup for Family Literacy Day is underway and runs until January 27th.
Do you have children's books you're looking to donate? Bring them to us at Journey Well, or one of our partners: Reel Treats Popcorn and Sweets, Whisk & Roll Bakery or The Happy Hippo Co. and we'll make sure they get to families served by Children’s Aid Society of Oxford County and Domestic Abuse Services Oxford.
How many books do you think we can round up?
