A common misconception is that all psychologists offer therapy. While it is true that licensed psychologists are trained in psychotherapy, many opt instead to specialize in other areas, such as research, testing/assessments, forensics, or academics. At Parnell, we specialize in cognitive testing!

Today our team proudly wears pink in support of Pink Shirt Day! 💗

Pink Shirt Day is a powerful reminder that kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others matters.

With approximately 7 in every 10 Canadian youth having reported experiencing bullying (CHSCY, 2019), bullying remains a significant concern affecting children's mental health, academic engagement, and overall well-being.

That’s why today - and every day - we advocate for safe, supportive environments where young people can thrive.

Brain maturation takes longer than you may think! While we develop and hone things like fine/gross motor skills, receptive and expressive language, and sensory processing as children; higher order executive functions such as impulse control, risk assessment, and planning tend to mature into our mid 20's

We are day 17 into psychology month and today's topic is very close to home! Let's talk about Parnell's specialty: school psychology! School psych uniquely focuses on how people learn and develop in educational settings. Through exploration of factors like behaviour, academic performance, social skills, attention/concentration, memory, and individual strengths/weaknesses, we can gain insight into a learner's cognitive profile and the supports they could benefit from.

Ever heard the phrase "use it if you've got it"? Well, when it comes to our brains we certainly do! The idea that we only use 10% of our brain is very much a myth. In reality, we use virtually all of our brain all of the time, with some parts being more active than others depending on what we're doing at the time.

Lets kick off Psychology Month with a fact about the founding of Psychology! Psychology was established as a distinct scientific discipline over 140 years ago, by Wilhelm Wundt. He was also the first person to call himself a psychologist!

Psychology Month is all about celebrating the science of the mind and the power of mental well-being! It’s an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health, break down stigma, and highlight the many ways psychology helps people understand themselves, build resilience, and strengthen their relationships. Keep an eye out on our socials this month as we’ll be sharing insights, tips, and resources to spark meaningful conversations and support our community in prioritizing mental wellness.

We’d like to interrupt your scrolling to gently remind you, as you head into the weekend, that with everything going on day-to-day and across the world, self-care matters. And sometimes, it can start with simply being kind to ourselves.

At Parnell Psychology, we know that conversations about mental health aren’t limited to just one day. They are ongoing, deeply important, and especially vital for children and young people as they learn to understand their emotions, experiences, and sense of self.

On Bell Let’s Talk Day, we’re reminded of the power that open, compassionate conversations can have in reducing stigma and building connection. For children and youth, feeling heard, believed, and supported can make a lasting difference - shaping not only their mental health today, but their well-being into the future.

Today, our team is sharing their reflections on what mental health conversations mean to them, both in their professional roles and in their own lives. These reflections speak to why we do this work, and to our commitment to creating safe, respectful spaces where young people and their families feel understood and supported.

We hope these reflections encourage meaningful conversations, greater understanding, and continued advocacy for child and youth mental health, today and every day.

Mid-January self-care reminder for parents & educators 🤍

Supporting children takes presence, patience, and care - whether at home or in the classroom. As routines settle into the new year, this is a gentle reminder to also check in with yourself.

Caring for your own well-being helps you stay grounded, connected, and present in the moments that matter most.

Remember, self-care can be anything that brings you comfort and calm, whether it’s taking a walk and leaving your technology behind, spending time with a pet, or a quick nap!

What’s one self-care tip that’s been helping you lately? 💛
