Wolbachia are intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that can manipulate their arthropod hosts' reproduction. Discovered by Hertig and Burt Wollbach, Hertig formally named them after his colleague in 1936.

Over on Bluesky, our readers noticed a similarity in names between the subject of this 'Person behind the name' commentary and its last author.

Full (lovely) story: these commentaries are peer-reviewed. First submission authored by Llor & Kjaer. A reviewer suggests they contact Prof Gram (granddaughter of HC Gram). They do. She contributes meaningfully (including his portrait!) & they feel it only right to make her last author.
