A few months ago, our apprentices Leoni injured her knee in a kickboxing competition – a dramatic experience for the up-and-coming talent. She’s pleased that she can rely on the electronic patient record (EPR) during treatment.
How did you get into kickboxing?
From the age of six, I could often be found at my uncle’s kickboxing school. He’s a Swiss champion several times over as well as my coach. I’ve been actively training for over five years – and up to six times a week before my injury.
What do you like about kickboxing?
The combination of technique, speed and mental strength. Every struggle is a challenge for the body, but also for the mind. You learn discipline and perseverance and to focus on the moment. Sport also gives me a strong sense of freedom and self-confidence.
Can you tell us more about the accident?
In the final minutes of the competition, I made a wrong move after a kick, fell and felt my knee crack. I wanted to carry on, but I collapsed again when I put weight on it. That’s why I went to the nearest hospital for an examination. The doctor told me that I’d need to have several checks performed. She also recommended that I open an EPR.
How did you use the EPR?
I was able to keep all documents, such as X-rays, medical reports and therapy plans, in one place. This was very helpful throughout the many stages, from hospital care to GP visits and physiotherapy. I didn’t have to bring any paper documents or remember what was said or prescribed and when.
What was the biggest advantage for you?
I was better informed about the entire treatment. In the past, I sometimes had difficulty remembering medical terms or understanding what was discovered during an examination. Now I can look it up in my record at any time.
Who would you recommend the EPR to in particular?
Anyone like me who practises a sport with a high risk of injury. But it actually makes sense for everyone, as you can store vaccinations, examinations or laboratory results in one place and access them at any time.
How are you doing today? Can you pursue your passion again?
I was diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate ligament, so I need to take things slowly. I’ve already been able to start fitness exercises and boxing training again. The kickboxing will have to wait a little longer. But my goal is clear: I want to compete again.
