Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a more serious condition than simple premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and it can result from hormonal imbalances, making relationships difficult. Traditional therapy typically involves the use of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluoxetine, combined with chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) and oral contraceptives to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Much can be done on the dietary front by eliminating sugars and refined products, and introducing probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil or evening primrose oil, and whole grains for their magnesium and B-complex vitamins. If needed, vitamin B6 should be supplemented. It’s better to replace meat with fish, legumes, and organic eggs. For energetic balance, which is necessary when dealing with nervous crises, it’s advisable to avoid excessively Yang foods like meat altogether. It may also be helpful to supplement with calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium if one is not consuming enough whole grains and nuts. Dark chocolate is also a good source of magnesium and, by promoting the release of dopamine and endorphins, helps improve mood and reduce anxiety levels. Soy is very important due to the presence of phytoestrogens and can further help improve symptoms. Regarding fluoxetine, there are alternatives without the side effects of the chemical molecule, which can even cause complete sexual insensitivity. St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) has the same efficacy as fluoxetine and is therefore the best substitute. It’s also a good idea to buy a sunrise-simulating lamp, with just 20 minutes of daily exposure being sufficient, or to supplement with high-quality tryptophan. The same applies to oral contraceptives, whose side effects include an increased risk of breast cancer. They can be replaced with a product that combines the synergistic action of wild yam (Dioscorea), chasteberry, and Damiana. Physical exercise is necessary to improve the overall condition, and activities like yoga or Qi Gong are particularly beneficial. By consistently following this treatment plan, symptoms will disappear, and the menstrual cycle will return to regularity.
