Emmanuel Bah Tokoh, Manager of CBC Radio FM 97.2 Bamenda, Earns PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Bamenda
On December 10, 2025, Dr. Emmanuel Bah Tokoh successfully defended his thesis, “Language and Ideology in Cameroon News Media: A Critical-Stylistic Analysis of Newspaper Headlines (2017-2023)”, earning an excellent grade. The defence took place before a jury of six members: Prof. Tanda Vincent (President), Prof. Victor N. Cheo (Rapporteur I), Prof. Asonganyi Esther (Rapporteur II), Prof. Njimeli Alexandre (Examiner I), Prof. Muluh Henry (Examiner II), and Prof. Wega Simeu (Member). The thesis was supervised by Prof. Victor N. Cheo, Professor of Communication, and Prof. Asonganyi Esther, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Bamenda.
This study examined the interplay between language and ideology in selected Cameroonian newspapers from 2017 to 2023, focusing on portrayals of the socio-political crisis in the North West and South West regions, the Boko Haram insurgency, and the aftermath of the 2018 presidential election. It addressed questions concerning language, ideology, social practices, and public perceptions of conflict in Cameroon. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identified key linguistic features and their corresponding ideological messages by qualitatively applying Jeffries’ textual-conceptual functions to analyse a purposive sample of 250 newspaper headlines from Cameroon Tribune, The Post, The Guardian Post, La Nouvelle Expression, and L’Œil du Sahel, curated through archival methods. Quantitative data was collected via a questionnaire administered to 250 readers in Bamenda, Buea, Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam, and Maroua using a multistage sampling technique, with descriptive and inferential statistics analysing perceptions of ideological biases. Grounded in an interdisciplinary framework that integrated Jeffries’ (2010) Critical-Stylistic Analysis, Goffman’s (1974) News Framing, and Katz’s (1959) Uses and Gratifications theories, the study revealed a significant correlation between language use and ideological fragmentation in newspaper headlines, influenced by proprietary and politico-economic interests. Specifically, Cameroon Tribune exhibited a positive tone aligned with a pro-government agenda, while The Post employed an emotive tone advocating for marginalised communities and political reform. The Guardian Post adopted a conciliatory approach reflecting a centrist view, La Nouvelle Expression used an evocative tone to support a multi-perspectivist agenda, and L’Œil du Sahel reflected an ethno-regionalist stance with its advocative tone. These linguistic-ideological patterns mirrored social practices and contributed to ideological polarisation among readers. The study recommends proactive government initiatives to address social inequalities, a nationwide journalist retraining programme, and increased subsidies for a responsible private press that promotes inclusive linguistic policies to foster social cohesion and national unity.
Practical Implications of Dr. Bah Tokoh’s PhD Thesis
Dr. Bah Tokoh’s research enhances understanding of how language shapes public perceptions and ideological tensions in conflict reporting. Insights from the study will guide the development of more balanced content, promoting social cohesion. Additionally, his emphasis on media accountability will inspire journalists to adopt higher ethical reporting standards. Understanding the influence of language will help media professionals engage a broader audience and foster inclusivity in their reporting. By bridging academic research with media practice, Dr. Tokoh positions himself as an expert, thereby enhancing his credibility in discussions about conflict reporting. His PhD will strengthen his academic and professional identity and relevance in an emerging society, as the insights from his thesis can drive meaningful change and fortify the fabric of our nation.
Dr. Bah Tokoh’s Message to Young Researchers in Cameroon
It is crucial for researchers, especially PhD candidates, to focus on exploring social problems and proposing viable solutions. Using academic frameworks to address issues like conflict, inequality, and social cohesion should be paramount. The goal of a PhD should be to contribute positively, not to exacerbate the challenges faced by our country. Respect for established institutions, university authorities, lecturers, and supervisors cannot be overstated in the academic journey. They provide guidance and support, and engaging with them constructively will enhance the quality of your research. Take their corrections and suggestions seriously, as they are often rooted in experience and can significantly improve your work. Approaching your PhD with a solution-oriented mindset and a spirit of collaboration with your academic community contributes to meaningful change that strengthens society rather than creates additional challenges.

In the process, the habit and culture of reporting for nature are been cultivated and institutionalized.

Editorial: Tcheroma Struggle and Awakening Now Irreversible and Irrevocable
✓The Nation is on Stand up for a Great Transition
✓Issa Tcheroma Bakary, the Game Changer “Ludus Mutator” ever Determined to take Over Cameroon Leadership Rule by Storm.
History have it on good books that there is a time for everything or every situation on earth or under the Sun.
The early wind of change brought by Fru Ndi and his SDF party in the early 90s followed by the upsurge of multiparty politics and the Kamto factor, all in attempt to oust the Biya Regime have slowly and steadily gained ground for well over 43 years and have now exploded with the irrevocable Tcheroma awakening which is consuming Cameroon like wild fire spreading in the dry season.
As the very expectant population awaits proclamation of October 12th Presidential election results.
Which so far, from obvious speculations avail that Issa Tcheroma Bakary likely won, “won” or better still is winning from various vote count results in most pulling stations all over the Republic and the system in place and election results mobilization bodies are fidgeting with or doing all in their possible best to doctor and mutilate results.
A situation that have raised irredeemable doubt and have placed the nation on hold, full of tension as the expectant crowd await results from the constitutional council full of passion and anxiety.
Passion and anxiety for the pronouncements of election results just as they are for the much needed change.
Given the ongoing misgivings already noticed at the level of the national vote counting commission headed by Dr. Emile Essomba .
Anything short of the supposed victory from the people’s vote for their popular and obvious choice from the look of things will spark war and chaos all over the nation.
Recent protests happening in the Northern Regions of Cameroon, in the economic Capital Douala and Dschang Menoua Division where Bill boards carrying the campaign effigy of President Paul Biya are being pulled down, are very bad signs and clear testimony to the fact that any pronouncement on the 27th of October short of declaring Issa Tcheroma Bakary as President will turn Cameroon into a chaotic Arena.
As the population is very bent this time to defend their votes unlike in the days of Fru Ndi and Kamto who sheepishly gave in to the Regime’s pressure in 2018.
This time, the whole of Northern Region as we report is boiling fully mobilized to take the nation by Storm in defense of the right of their Presidential candidate.
The North and Northerners from the look of things are bent and determined to make enforce the decision of the ballot box by do or die.
As we report there is serious tension rise all over the Republic, mass militarization of urban towns and major junctions.
To say, all is not well ahead of the proclamation of 2025 Presidential election which may spark chaos and rebellion all over the nation.
As the population is determined just as government is subjected to respect the rules of the game intoto.
An uneasy calm hovers all over the Republic and the government plus officials charged with mobilizing results and proclaiming them are not at rest.
We are talking of Dr. Enow Abrams Egbe and Clement Atangana, ELECAM Chairperson and President of the Constitutional Council who are now likely having their “hands tied”, as supposed.
This is because any result short of victory for Tcheroma will tear Cameroon apart given the chaotic atmosphere hovering all over the Republic.
Fru Ndi refused to trod on blood, Kamto backpedaled at the last minute in 2018 with Skirmishes or pocket resistance which were quelled easily by the regime.
Northerners believe in an eye for an eye, meaning the Tcheroma movement is irreversible and irrevocable given that the person in question meant business from the word go.
It was not for nothing that he was amongst the coup plotters, today chairman of an opposition party FSNC, later member of government and today is one step to Etoudi.
This time around, one step to Etoudi, for those who know Tcheroma Bakary, it is a do or die battle most especially as he has crossed the battle line drawn by government. It is No more, No less. Allahu akbar.
The Tcheroma we all know from history who have served six years prison term in Yoko who is now facing a possible death penalty if he is not declared winner, will have no other option than to set the whole nation ablaze and die for a noble course as he claims.
As we report secret meetings and gatherings are taking place in Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC) hide outs to m**f energy and strategize on how to raise nation wide opposition and rebellion in the event of a contrary election pronouncement by the Constitutional Council.
The nation is on high alert as impending doom draws near slowly and steadily. Cameroon Needs a lot of prayers as the nation hold it’s breath.
“Authority forgets a dying king” Shakespeare, which is just the reason why Tcheroma has been receiving congratulatory calls all over even from top Military officials paying their allegiance and loyalty as he divulged recently.
“Things fall apart and the center no longer holds” Chinua Achebe. The will of God is the true test of time. Tcheroma is called to fulfil Allah’s sacred mission for Cameroonians using whatever means according to his followers.
One thing is clear if Cameroonians voted massively Tcheroma the “Devil” he is today likened to, then he is their “Best Devil” who will defend their course with the last dose of blood in his vein. Allah..
So far so good, the national vote counting commission are done with their job.
The President of the constitutional Council Clement Atangana the pronouncer has announced the highly awaited session to begin on Wednesday the 22nd of October 2025 and it is obvious that before the 27th of October a declaration will be made that will redefine history or maintain the status quo for the next seven years.
A bitter peal to swallow for all those who have been raving for change and will most likely end the next seven years serving prison terms for orchestrating hostilities against the state in contest of electoral results.
