We are excited to have been on Radios Buea, talking about Sexual and Gender Based Violence on Key and Vulnerable populations. The major center of discussion saw the background of SGBV, where according to the WHO, 1 in 3 women world wide have experienced physical or s*xual violence which translates to about 736million women .
Gender based violence is an umbrella term used to describe any harmful act perpetrated against a person based on their gender .SGBV refers to violence directed at an individual based on their gender or s*x , including r**e , s*xual abuse, s*xual exploitation, s*xual harassment, stigmatization and discrimination. KVPs will refer to Female s*x workers, MSMs, PLHIV , Drug users etc.
We discussed some major causes of SGBV, some of which stem from
* Lack of awareness
* Religious beliefs
* Weak laws and enforcement
* Social norms etc
In order to prevent this SGBV that eating deep into society, communities should
* Promote education and awareness raising
* Support survivor centered services
* Strengthen Laws and policies
* Promote healthy relationships and consent culture
This prevention is essential , because SGBV has far fetched consequences like
* Physical harm ( injuries, death, disability)
* Promotes emotional trauma like depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts
* psychological distress like low self esteem
It is important to note that SGBV is a human right violation. All human beings have a fundamental human right to life, right to non discrimination, right to health , right to liberty etc, irrespective of their s*x, gender, race , ethnicity or religion.
