IUAL, University of Bamenda Sign Landmark MoU to Strengthen Skills-Based Education and Student Mobility
By Neba Jerome Ambe
The International University of Alkebu-Lan (IUAL) and the University of Bamenda (UBa) have formalized a major academic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the University of Bamenda auditorium. The agreement is poised to significantly enhance higher education in Cameroon by promoting skills-oriented learning, facilitating student mobility, and advancing collaborative research and curriculum development.
Speaking during the ceremony, Professor Theresa Nkuo Akenji, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bamenda, emphasized that the collaboration aligns with national educational reforms focused on competency-based learning. “We are simply implementing the new law which emphasizes students graduating with skills that can already be absorbed in the job market. This is a room for our students to go out for academic internships, and we are implementing problem-based learning,” she noted. Her remarks highlighted the commitment of both institutions to produce graduates equipped with practical, industry-ready expertise.
A central feature of the MoU is the creation of seamless pathways for student mobility and credit transfer between IUAL and UBa. These arrangements will allow students to advance their studies with fewer administrative constraints while benefiting from guaranteed admission opportunities. The streamlined transition is expected to broaden academic exposure and promote deeper engagement across programs.
According to Mejang Vincent Akongwa, Board Chairman of IUAL, the partnership will also provide IUAL students with expanded access to the University of Bamenda’s academic resources, including its libraries, laboratories, and specialized programs. Opportunities such as dual-credit courses and study-abroad initiatives are expected to enrich students’ learning experiences and strengthen their practical skill sets.
The MoU further outlines provisions for faculty exchanges and joint research activities. These initiatives will facilitate knowledge-sharing, enhance teaching quality, and foster collaborative innovation. Joint curriculum development, aimed at ensuring both academic excellence and industry relevance, will support graduates in navigating the evolving job market with confidence.
Research cooperation between the two universities is also set to deepen, with shared funding opportunities, pooled research resources, and co-authored publications poised to boost their collective academic visibility and impact. By working together, IUAL and UBa aim to contribute more effectively to national and global knowledge production.
Career development forms another cornerstone of the partnership. Strengthened industry linkages and expanded internship programs will offer students hands-on experience in professional environments, equipping them with essential problem-solving skills and improving their employability.
Additionally, the MoU establishes a framework for enhanced quality assurance. By aligning IUAL’s academic standards with those of the well-established University of Bamenda, the agreement supports improved accreditation and reinforces confidence among students, parents, and stakeholders.
Overall, the MoU signed on November 21 marks a strategic step toward strengthening collaborative, skills-oriented, and research-driven higher education in Cameroon. It reflects a shared commitment to fostering academic innovation and producing graduates who can effectively meet labor market demands.
