The ultrasonic flow sensor in the pulmonary function testers uses a pair of ultrasonic transducers to send and receive ultrasonic waves alternately (or simultaneously), and indirectly measures the flow rate of the fluid by observing the time difference between the forward flow and the reverse flow of the ultrasonic wave in the medium (gas or liquid), and then through the flow rate to calculate an indirect flow.

Ultrasonic flow sensor principle:

There are 2 holes above and below the breathing tube, and 2 probes respectively. It can be detected when the airflow is blowing. A beam of ultrasound detects the airflow, and a beam of ultrasound reflects back into the airflow. Flow and velocity can be measured by calculating the change in the time difference between t1 and t2.
