Joe Biden Diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer: Modern Technology Offers New Hope
Recently, former U.S. President Joe Biden was diagnosed by leading medical institutions with advanced prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9. This score indicates a highly aggressive and high-risk form of the disease, known for its tendency to metastasize. At present, cancer cells have already spread to the skeletal system, and the progression of the disease is rapid and concerning.

Despite the serious condition, there is positive news from the medical community: Biden’s cancer remains hormone-sensitive, meaning there is still a treatment window. The Biden family is actively collaborating with a multidisciplinary medical team to assess personalized treatment plans and explore cutting-edge precision therapies.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Enters New Era
Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in men worldwide, with incidence rising particularly among older populations. In the past, treatment heavily relied on open surgery and systemic radiotherapy or chemotherapy, often accompanied by significant side effects and long recovery periods.

With advancements in technology, prostate cancer treatment has entered a new phase focused on being minimally invasive, precise, and low-impact. Innovative techniques include:
• Radical prostatectomy
• 3D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
• Hormonal therapy
• Cryoablation
• NanoKnife (IRE - Irreversible Electroporation)

Among them, cryoablation and NanoKnife therapyare emerging as leading modern options due to their safety, minimal invasiveness, and high rate of functional preservation. These treatments are especially suitable for elderly patients or those in mid-to-late stages who wish to maintain quality of life.

Cryoablation – Targeted Cancer Destruction, Fast Recovery
Cryoablation uses ultra-low temperatures (as low as -160°C) to freeze and destroy cancer cells in the prostate. With the help of a cryoprobe, the tumor is precisely targeted, leading to dehydration, oxygen deprivation, vessel blockage, and permanent cancer cell death.

Advantages of cryoablation include:
✅ No need for open surgery – minimally invasive
✅ Short operation time and quick recovery
✅ No reliance on chemotherapy or full-body radiation
✅ Minimal impact on sexual function and urinary control
✅ Ideal for elderly patients or those unfit for surgery

NanoKnife – A High-Tech Solution for “No-Go Zones”
NanoKnife (IRE) is a revolutionary non-thermal ablation technology. Using tiny electrodes, high-voltage pulses are delivered to create irreversible nano-sized pores in the membranes of cancer cells. This disrupts cellular balance and precisely destroys targeted tumor cells without harming nearby critical structures such as nerves, blood vessels, or the urethra.

Key advantages of NanoKnife include:
✅ Ultra-precise ablation near sensitive areas (e.g., nerves, re**um, bladder)
✅ Non-thermal technique – no charring or thermal injury
✅ Significantly reduces risks of sexual dysfunction and incontinence
✅ Enables personalized treatment planning via imaging navigation and computer modeling

[Patient Story] [Hong Kong – Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma – Arterial Infusion Chemotherapy]
Interventional Therapy Helps a Hong Kong Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patient Turn the Tide
In southern China, there’s a notorious “villain” obsessed with people from the south. It displays strong regional discrimination, mainly targeting those from Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hainan, and Hong Kong–Macau areas. It’s called nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), also known as the “Cantonese Cancer.” Mr. Zhang (pseudonym) from Hong Kong became one of its latest targets.
DD6DCD06-6E0C-4423-B11C-C2A3FB49F6B7.jpg
“In my left ear, I kept hearing ringing and couldn’t hear clearly. There was always blood in my nasal discharge...” In 2022, Mr. Zhang was diagnosed with a mass in his nasopharynx. A biopsy confirmed it as a malignant tumor. The local hospital recommended chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but he refused without hesitation. Many of his friends had been through similar experiences and warned him that radiotherapy not only requires tooth extraction beforehand but also brings lifelong side effects. The treatment process is so painful that it drove some patients to suicidal thoughts.
As a result, Mr. Zhang chose traditional Chinese medicine, but his symptoms did not improve. In 2024, he traveled to Japan in hopes of trying cellular immunotherapy. However, after eight months, there was no improvement. Worse still, the tumor in his neck had grown to the size of a tennis ball. He was suffering from difficulty opening his mouth, shortness of breath, headaches, and hearing loss—all of which severely tormented him.
“Go to Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou!” Mr. Zhang recalled a report about Fuda successfully treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma. After speaking with hospital staff, he made a decisive move and sought care at Fuda Medical Center’s Department III (Head and Neck Oncology) in March 2025.
Mr. Zhang’s condition upon admission was dire: the tumor in his neck was massive, at risk of rupture at any time, posing an imminent threat to his life. His wife was extremely anxious. Understanding the urgency, Director Xu Jiongyuan of Department III prioritized tumor control and symptom relief.

△ Condition upon admission
Further examination revealed that the tumor had invaded the skull base, intracranial brain tissue, oropharynx, and bilateral cervical lymph nodes. After a multidisciplinary discussion and evaluation, considering the tumor’s large size and rich blood supply, an individualized interventional treatment plan was developed.
The first step was arterial infusion chemotherapy targeted at the nasopharyngeal lesion. Given Mr. Zhang’s poor general condition at admission, the treatment was carried out using low-dose chemotherapy to minimize adverse effects. After this round of chemotherapy, imaging showed tumor shrinkage, indicating that the treatment was effective.
Next, using super-selective catheterization, arterial infusion chemotherapy combined with chemoembolization was performed. This involved precisely delivering drugs into the tumor core and then injecting embolic agents to block the tumor’s blood supply. This approach cut off the tumor’s nutrient source while protecting healthy surrounding tissues, enabling a high concentration of medication to act directly on the tumor.

Post-treatment imaging showed significant tumor shrinkage on both sides.

“I could clearly feel the tumor in my neck shrinking—it's amazing,” said Mr. Zhang. Both he and his wife were astonished by the results and delighted by the symptom relief. After two rounds of interventional treatment, follow-up examinations showed that the bilateral masses had reduced from 10×8 cm and 10×9 cm to 4×5 cm and 5×6 cm. Redness and swelling subsided significantly. Tumor markers such as CEA and SCC antigen also declined. The treatment efficacy was assessed as PR (partial response).

△ Imaging after treatment
“We had mentally prepared for the worst, but thankfully Fuda had multiple technical solutions to offer me a ‘way out’.” Before admission, even painkillers couldn’t relieve Mr. Zhang’s suffering, and he could only consume liquid food. Now, after treatment, the tumor has shrunk, pain is relieved, and he is eating normally. He attributes all of this to Fuda’s advanced medical technology and outstanding healthcare services. “No one wants to be hospitalized, but the staff here are warm and caring, which makes us feel at ease.”
Currently, Mr. Zhang continues to receive interventional treatment and immunotherapy to further control the tumor and create opportunities for curative radiotherapy.

Health Tips
As the name suggests, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that occurs in the nasopharynx. Because it develops deep within the head and has a hidden onset, early-stage tumors are small and hard to detect. Being adjacent to the eyes, ears, throat, and skull base, it easily invades nearby organs through the submucosa or spreads via the lymphatic system.
NPC is highly malignant and often metastasizes to the cervical lymph nodes even in early stages. Many patients are already in the advanced stages by the time obvious symptoms appear, so early detection of abnormalities is crucial. Classic symptoms include nasal congestion, blood-tinged mucus, tinnitus, hearing loss, headaches, facial numbness, and double vision. Key physical signs include nasopharyngeal masses, cervical lymph node metastasis, and cranial nerve involvement.
Director Xu Jiongyuan emphasizes: If any of these symptoms occur, patients should promptly visit a specialized hospital. Nasal endoscopy often reveals nasopharyngeal masses, and a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. If nasal endoscopy shows no clear abnormalities but symptoms persist, enhanced MRI or CT scans may be needed. In some cases, a deep tissue biopsy is required for diagnosis.
It’s important to note that symptoms like blood-tinged mucus and ear congestion are not unique to NPC; they can also occur in benign conditions such as otitis media or sudden deafness. Sowhile it’s important to seek medical evaluation promptly, there’s no need for undue panic.

Lung Cancer Patient from Xinjiang Crosses Half of China to Rewrite Her Fate at Fuda
Cough and Chest-Back Pain—Watch Out, It Could Be Lung Cancer
Coughing and chest-back pain were Azhen’s first symptoms. The local hospital diagnosed it as a lung infection and prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment. However, after eight days of hospitalization, her condition had not improved. “Later, the hospital advised us to transfer to a cancer hospital.” Further examinations revealed an irregular nodule in the basal segment of the right lower lung lobe, possibly malignant, along with enlarged lymph nodes on both sides of the neck, raising concerns about metastasis.
Azhen was reluctant to undergo lung resection surgery, fearing the trauma and long recovery period. She and her family began seeking treatment elsewhere, hoping to find a specialized hospital that could address her condition promptly. In their search, they came across information about Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital—such as its status as a national key clinical oncology hospital, its non-invasive ablation techniques, and the renowned “dual-blade hero” President Dr. Liu Lizhi—which caught their attention. After an initial online consultation, Azhenarrived at Fuda’s Department One in early September 2024.

No Surgery Needed—Freezing the Tumor to Death
Irregular shape, high density, spiculated edges, and pleural traction—these malignant features of the lung nodule immediately raised red flags for attending physicians Dr. Shi Haiyan and Dr. Pan Zhongbao. Moreover, the presence of multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum and right lung hilum called for heightened vigilance. Based on Azhen’s medical history and test results, and considering the presence of high-risk malignant nodules in both the upper and lower lobes of the right lung, the medical team decided on a preliminary treatment plan: percutaneous lung nodule biopsy and cryoablation, along with a biopsy of the right cervical lymph nodes.
The percutaneous biopsy helps confirm the nature of both the lung nodules and the cervical lymph nodes, while cryoablation, guided by CT imaging, involves inserting a fine probe directly into the tumor. The cancer cells are then "frozen to death" using extremely low temperatures, followed by a rewarming phase. This method effectively destroys the lesion while sparing surrounding tissues and preserving lung function. Compared to traditional surgery, cryoablation causes less pain and allows for quicker recovery. It can also be combined with other systemic treatments such as chemotherapy and targeted immunotherapy, enhancing tumor necrosis and apoptosis, and potentially extending patient survival.

“I didn’t dare move a muscle during the procedure!” Azhen recalled. She was under local anesthesia and fully awake throughout the cryoablation, fearing any movement might shift the needle. But with President Dr. Liu Lizhi explaining the procedure in simple, reassuring terms, she gradually calmed down. “The medical staff kept chatting with me, and the whole process felt almost effortless.”
Pathological results confirmed a diagnosis of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in the right lung and metastatic adenocarcinoma in the right cervical lymph nodes, indicating multiple lung tumors with metastasis. Dr. Shi Haiyan explained that lung adenocarcinoma typically develops insidiously and is often not detected until it has reached the middle or late stages. In Azhen’scase, the tumor’s proximity to the pleura caused nerve irritation and pain, which fortunately prompted her to seek timely medical attention.
Comprehensive Treatment Brings More Hope
For Azhen, cryoablation alone wasn’t enough—comprehensive treatment was essential. Based on her doctors’ recommendations, she underwent genetic testing and was fortunate to find a targetable mutation, allowing her to begin oral targeted therapy. Additionally, doctors arranged multiple rounds of arterial infusion chemotherapy to control tumor progression.

“Look at my hair—it’s still thick and healthy!” Azhenexclaimed with joy. Initially, she was very worried about the side effects of chemotherapy, especially after hearing horror stories of hair loss and pallor. But arterial infusion chemotherapy completely changed her perception. “Each session takes only about 30 minutes.” During treatment, interventional doctors often chatted with her, and before she even realized it, the session would be over—leaving her with no psychological burden.
Clinically, arterial infusion chemotherapy involves delivering drugs directly into the artery feeding the tumor via a catheter. The slow, continuous infusion allows high concentrations of the drug to accumulate at the tumor site, killing cancer cells effectively without seriously harming normal tissue. Meanwhile, the drug concentration that reaches the peripheral veins is very low, greatly reducing side effects on other organs. In short, this method “reduces toxicity and increases efficacy”—a win-win.
After comprehensive treatment, Azhen’s cough and pain have significantly diminished, and the cervical lymph node metastases have visibly shrunk.
Though the Journey Was Long, She’s Grateful for Her Healing Companions
“It’s over 4,000 kilometers from Xinjiang to Guangzhou—far, tiring, and exhausting—but absolutely worth it.” Azhen likened herself to Tang Monk on his journey to the West: though filled with hardships, she overcame each challenge. Despite the long road, she found companionship and support along the way. “I must give a huge shout-out to the medical staff here!” she said, praising Fuda’s professionalism and dedication. She was especially grateful to Dr. Shi, who continued to provide timely and effective support even during her home recovery, much like a family doctor. Before her discharge, Azhen and her husband expressed their heartfelt thanks in a letter and custom-made a silk banner to present to the staff.

“We may not be rich, but our life is comfortable; our children are doing well, so we have no worries. All we need is a good mindset and scientific treatment.” Now, Azhen hopes for continued health and dreams of traveling and relaxing wherever and whenever she can.

[Patient Story] [Indonesia - Thyroid Nodule - Microwave Ablation - Mei Li]
Indonesian Woman Turns Into "Giant Neck" After Rejecting Surgery: Fuda Uses "Needle Instead of Knife" for a Clever Solution

“At first, it was small, but it kept getting bigger.” In the Medical Oncology Ward of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, a woman in her sixties, named Mei Li (pseudonym), shared her experience of "nurturing a thyroid nodule."
A95639A5-1F1C-493C-B17A-DCD57F74E5EA.png
Mei Li is from Indonesia. In 2006, she noticed swelling in her neck. After visiting a local hospital, tests indicated a “thyroid nodule,” and a biopsy result showed it was a “benign nodule,” not cancer.

She felt somewhat relieved. Since the nodule was small and there weren’t any significant symptoms at the time, she chose to monitor it regularly. However, the nodule grew larger each year, and her local hospital repeatedly recommended surgery to remove it. But Mei Li, without a second thought, rejected the idea.

“I have relatives and friends who underwent total thyroidectomy, and they became easily fatigued and had significantly reduced immunity,” Mei Li said, worried she would face the same situation. She avoided surgery for this reason.

Although the nodule was benign, if it grew too large, it could pressure surrounding organs. As Mei Li’s nodule grew bigger, she started experiencing discomfort when swallowing, coughing while drinking water, and other symptoms, which forced her to pay more attention to her condition.

She thought, surely there must be a way to avoid major surgery while preserving her thyroid function. In the end, she found a solution at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital.

Upon admission, Mei Li’s neck displayed a noticeable bulge. Ultrasound indicated that both sides of her thyroid had nodules classified as TI-RADS 4a, with sizes of 4×6cm (right side) and 2×5cm (left side). Given Mei Li’s situation, Dr. Xu Jiong Yuan, the head of the Medical Oncology Department, organized a multidisciplinary discussion. After evaluation, the expert team initially suggested surgical removal, but Mei Li still refused.

After several rounds of communication, the team, considering Mei Li’s age, the characteristics of her condition, and her preferences, decided to proceed with a treatment that balanced thyroid function preservation and overall aesthetic concerns. They chose to perform a left-side thyroid biopsy with intraoperative frozen section analysis and microwave ablation.
8B8334BA-F167-452A-AFAE-CE6F5F91479A.jpg 56DF9A5C-85BA-4F44-B448-62DB6E6E49ED.png
The entire treatment was guided by ultrasound. With B-ultrasound for precise localization, a fine needle was used to perform a biopsy on the left thyroid nodule, and the sample was sent for rapid intraoperative pathological examination, which showed no cancer cells.

Due to the size of the nodule, during the procedure, saline was injected between the thyroid and trachea, between the thyroid and left common carotid artery, and between the thyroid and esophagus, creating a water barrier to increase the gap between the nodule and surrounding tissues, protecting vital structures such as the trachea, esophagus, neck blood vessels, recurrent laryngeal nerve, and superior laryngeal nerve.

Next, microwave ablation was performed at 30W power. The position of the microwave probe was adjusted dynamically from bottom to top, from inside to outside, and from deep to shallow, until the ablation area covered the target region. The probe was then removed, gradually “disintegrating” Mei Li’s thyroid nodule.

“Now I feel much more comfortable!” Two days after the procedure, Mei Li noticed that all her previous discomforts had disappeared. The bulging area on her neck was visibly smaller. Furthermore, with microwave ablation being minimally invasive, the only mark left on her skin was a tiny needle hole, almost no visible scar. She no longer needed to find “special” clothes to cover her neck, and as someone who cares about her appearance, she was very satisfied!

Health Knowledge Corner
Not all thyroid nodules that grow over time turn into cancer. Most thyroid nodules are benign, and only a small percentage may become malignant. Although the long-term growth of thyroid nodules may indicate an increased risk of malignancy, not all thyroid nodules will turn cancerous.

When a thyroid nodule increases in size, doctors typically recommend further tests, such as fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, to determine the nature of the nodule. If the biopsy results show malignancy, further treatment is generally required.

Microwave ablation for thyroid nodules and small cancers is an effective minimally invasive treatment. In recent years, it has gained widespread attention due to its numerous advantages. Unlike traditional surgery, microwave ablation is minimally invasive, offers quick recovery, and has a high safety profile, making it the first choice for many patients with benign thyroid tumors and small cancers.
D77CE597-311B-404F-BAA0-B503430C15D8.png
Finally, Dr. Xu Jiong Yuan, head of the Medical Oncology Department at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, reminds: If you experience unexplained neck discomfort, consider coming to the hospital for an ultrasound to check for thyroid tumors. Symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, palpitations, arrhythmia, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, and irritability may also indicate thyroid issues. To prevent further complications, it’s important to seek medical attention at a reputable hospital as soon as possible.

Oct.4.2024.

【Patient Story】【Thailand - Kidney Cancer - Cryoablation; Brachytherapy-Pracha】
Multimodal Treatment Helped Kidney Cancer Thai Man Survive Beyond Expectations for Over Ten Years
"In this hospital, I feel like I’ve entrusted my life to a team, not just one person." Pracha (alias), a 65-year-old man from Thailand, who has been fighting cancer for over a decade, recently discovered nodules in his adrenal area during a follow-up examination, indicating a potential tumor recurrence. Without hesitation, he traveled thousands of miles back to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, seeking treatment from Associate Director Dr. Long Xin’an.

Pracha has much to say when it comes to cancer. He has narrowly escaped death multiple times, and the side effects of treatments once made him feel like life was unbearable, like he was just passing time. Fortunately, he persevered and found the right treatment for himself. Nowadays, he almost forgets that he is a patient, except for his regular check-ups.
Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer After Recurrent Back Pain
In 2007, Pracha began experiencing pain on the right side of his lower back. The local hospital initially treated it as muscle pain. However, as time went on, the pain worsened. When he could no longer bear it, he returned to the hospital for further examination. After a series of tests, the doctor told him: "You have kidney cancer!"
Back pain is common, so how could it be kidney cancer? Lower back pain is indeed one of the early symptoms of kidney cancer, but since back pain is so prevalent in daily life—often caused by poor posture—many people don't take it seriously. Additionally, blood in the urine and abdominal masses are other potential signs of kidney cancer. Since the kidneys are located deep in the back of the abdomen, tumors can go unnoticed for a long time. Therefore, when symptoms like these appear, further examinations should be conducted immediately.
Pracha underwent a right kidney resection, and the postoperative pathology report confirmed stage I kidney cancer. However, in early 2013, Pracha experienced back pain again—the tumor had recurred in his right kidney! After undergoing palliative surgery, there was still a tumor close to a blood vessel that could not be removed. The local doctors started him on targeted drug therapy. They warned him that if the drugs failed to control the tumor, he might only have four months left to live.

However, the side effects of the targeted drugs, including rashes, loss of appetite, and loss of taste, made life unbearable for Pracha. He even felt that the four months predicted by the doctors would be too long to endure. He began to hope for a new treatment that could reduce his suffering.
A Choice that Allowed Him to Live Peacefully for Ten Years
Through various channels, Pracha learned about Fuda Cancer Hospital's advanced treatments, such as cryoablation, NanoKnife, and iodine seed implantation. These treatments are minimally invasive, have fewer side effects, and offer faster recovery. Although these therapies were unheard of in Thailand, he didn't want to miss any opportunity, so in April 2013, he traveled to Guangzhou and sought treatment at Fuda Cancer Hospital.
Upon admission, further examinations revealed that the cancer had metastasized to his abdominal wall and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Given the deep location of the retroperitoneal tumors, surgery was challenging. The doctors decided on a combined treatment of cryoablation and iodine seed implantation for his metastatic cancer. Alongside this, immunotherapy and targeted drug therapy were administered to enhance the body's immune response while targeting specific cancer cells, ultimately controlling and killing the cancer.

Cryoablation uses extreme cold to "freeze" tumor cells in a short amount of time, causing them to die. In addition to the "physical" attack by freezing, cryoablation also has a "magical" effect: when the tumor cells thaw, the tumor's internal antigens are exposed, stimulating the body's immune cells to recognize and attack the tumor. This can trigger a "distant effect," causing distant metastases to shrink or disappear.

Iodine seed implantation, under the guidance of imaging equipment, places small radioactive seeds directly into or near the tumor. These seeds continuously emit low-energy radiation, precisely targeting and destroying cancer cells. This treatment is particularly beneficial for tumors that are difficult to completely remove through surgery or for patients who are not fit for major surgery. It offers high precision, minimal side effects, and little damage to surrounding tissues and organs.
Compared to the large incisions of traditional surgery, the minimally invasive techniques at Fuda Cancer Hospital, which involve only small needle punctures, greatly reduced the psychological and physical burden on Pracha. The careful explanations by the medical staff before and after each treatment provided him with immense comfort. He returned to the hospital for multiple treatments over the years and always placed complete trust in Fuda. By 2018, follow-up results consistently showed that his condition had stabilized, with the retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis shrinking significantly.
Returning to Fuda, Full of Confidence
After 2018, Pracha continued taking targeted drugs and underwent regular check-ups in Thailand, with his condition remaining stable. However, during a follow-up examination in January 2024, a nodule was discovered in his right adrenal area, highly suspicious of tumor recurrence. Upon receiving this result, Pracha immediately returned to Fuda Cancer Hospital for treatment. He knew that Dr. Long Xinan was well-acquainted with his medical history and trusted him implicitly.
Further examinations revealed metastases in the right abdominal wall and retroperitoneal lymph nodes, along with a nodule near his right adrenal gland that appeared to be a metastatic tumor. With Pracha and his family’s consent, Dr. Long performed cryoablation on the right adrenal area and the right side of the abdomen under the guidance of ultrasound and CT, reducing the tumor burden.

During the procedure, Dr. Long used a cryoprobe to puncture the target area and performed two cycles of cryoablation, monitoring the iceball to ensure it covered the tumor while avoiding damage to nearby intestines. After thawing, the cryoprobe was removed. For the tumor near the abdominal wall close to the intestines, Dr. Long used a PTC needle to inject anti-tumor drugs, minimizing the risk of damaging the intestines.
Now, having completed this stage of treatment, Pracha's condition remains stable. He believes that with the right treatment, a harmonious doctor-patient relationship, and an unyielding spirit, he can live another ten, even twenty years!
