Dutasteride, also known as duagen powder, is a 5α-reductase inhibitor primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, a non-cancerous condition involving an enlarged prostate) and male pattern baldness (also known as androgenetic alopecia, a common hereditary hair loss condition that primarily affects men but can also affect women. This type of hair loss is closely related to the effects of male hormones, especially DHT (dihydrotestosterone)). In affected individuals, hair follicles on the scalp are extremely sensitive to DHT, causing them to shrink and gradually cease normal growth. This, in turn, leads to hair loss... Hair gradually thins, decreases, and eventually falls out, forming a typical pattern of thinning hair on the crown and a receding hairline. Additionally, it can be used as a hormone therapy option for transgender women. It blocks the activity of 5α-reductases 1 and 2, thus preventing testosterone from being converted into the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a male hormone that promotes prostate growth and contributes to the process of male pattern baldness. It was patented by GlaxoSmithKline in 1993 and approved for medical use in 2001. It is available as a generic drug in the United States and other regions. With nearly one million prescriptions issued, it became the 291st most commonly prescribed drug in the United States in 2018.
