HOW CORN GROWS
Seed Planting: The corn growth cycle typically begins with planting seeds in well-prepared soil. Farmers may plant seeds directly into the ground or use machinery to plant them in rows.
Germination: After planting, the seeds absorb moisture from the soil, causing them to swell and germinate. Germination is the process where the seed begins to sprout and develop roots.
Seedling Stage: As the seed germinates, it sends out a shoot that grows upward toward the surface of the soil. This shoot eventually emerges from the ground as a young corn plant. Meanwhile, roots develop below the surface to anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
Vegetative Growth: During the vegetative stage, the corn plant focuses on growing leaves and developing a strong root system. It requires ample sunlight, water, and nutrients to fuel its growth. The plant's stem elongates, and additional leaves form in a spiral pattern around the stem
Tasseling and Pollination: As the corn plant matures, it begins to produce tassels, which are the male reproductive organs. These tassels release pollen into the air, which is carried by the wind to the silk, the female reproductive organs, located at the tip of each ear of corn. Each silk connects to a potential kernel on the cob.
Ear Development: After successful pollination, each fertilized silk on the cob develops into a kernel of corn. The kernels swell and fill out along the cob as the plant continues to grow and mature.
Maturation: The corn plant reaches maturity when the kernels are fully formed and the husks surrounding the ears of corn have dried and turned brown. At this stage, the corn is ready for harvest.
Harvesting: Farmers harvest corn using specialized machinery, such as combines, which strip the ears of corn from the stalks and remove the kernels from the cob. The harvested corn is then transported to processing facilities or used for various purposes, including human consumption, animal feed, and industrial applications.
Throughout its growth cycle, corn requires favorable growing conditions, including adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients, to thrive and produce a successful harvest.
