For those who think horses don't feel pain as we do - you could be right. They may feel far more.

CAN YOU RECOGNIZE HEAT STRESS IN HORSES? ☀️🐴

Signs of heat stroke may range from mild to severe and life-threatening; they may include the following:
1) Temperature as high as 105 to 107 F
2) Rapid breathing, rapid pulse
3) Stumbling, weakness, depression
4) Refusal to eat or work
5) Dry skin and dehydration
6) In severe cases, a horse may collapse or go into convulsions or a coma

Exercise is a major source of body heat, and horses with a compromised ability to sweat are especially at risk of overheating, even in cooler weather with a small amount of exercise. Horses with heavy muscling or excess fat or in poor condition will also have more problems. (Keep in mind that strenuous exercise on a hot, humid day can lead to problems in a short period of time for even the best-conditioned horse.)
Foals are at risk in hot weather as well—The mare may be fine, but her foal may be getting sick from being out on a hot day as foals usually cannot take as much heat as adult horses.

Does this mean you should not work your horse on a hot day? Not necessarily. It just means you should take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and signs of heat exhaustion, as heat exhaustion can advance to heat stroke quickly. Above all, be kind and attentive to your horse’s need. If you feel hot, your equine friend feels even hotter. So if they look tired, it’s time for a drink, a cold bath, and a break in the shade.

How many of you have heard the term “cinchy”???
I hear way to often, “Be careful when you tighten the girth that horse is cinchy…” or “I can’t figure out why my horse is so cinchy.”

Horses aren’t just “cinchy”. They don’t just decide “I’m going to pin my ears and/or bit this person that’s tightening my girth.” There are so many issues that cause horses to act out while being saddled. ⬇️

❌Stomach Ulcers
❌Tack that doesn’t fit properly (therefore causing pain)
❌Sores, lumps or cuts near the girth
❌What about a sore back??!!

There are so much more explanations to “cinchy” horses. A lot of times I see it be tied to a response to pain.

Has your horse ever shown any signs of being “cinchy”?

There’s only a few more days left until horses are getting checked into the fairgrounds! It’s not to late to get a massage in quick before heading out.

I will also be out at the fairgrounds and am available if any ponies need some help in the middle of a stressful week!

You’ll also notice I have my discount extended through the week after fair. It’s going to be a busy & stressful week for you and your horses. Getting your horse a massage after your back home would not be a bad idea!

Good luck everyone & enjoy every moment🤗

"HOT" TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER RIDING

As you enjoy some fun in the sun with your favorite equine, make sure you understand how the combination of heat and humidity can take the fun part out the equation — and potentially even turn into a dangerous situation for your horse.

When riding in hot weather, remember to take precautions and use your common sense. Remain vigilant for dehydration and for signs of heat exhaustion, as the situation can quickly escalate into heat stroke. If your horse looks hot and tired, it's time for a drink, a cold bath and a break in the shade.

Consult your veterinarian for more information, or learn more about the signs of heat stroke on our website at https://aaep.org/issue/heat-stroke

How does the current air quality affect my horses?!

During this time it’s best to…
1. Keep your horses calm and LIMIT exercise, especially when smoke is visible!!
2. Be sure fresh & clean water is accessible at all times.
3. Wet down arena and/or dry lots to reduce the inhalation of particles.
4. A mild cough may be normal as your horse is clearing mucus, be sure to keep a close watch to ensure it doesn’t worsen.

Respiratory Therapy Has Been Proven To Boost Performance❗️

Horses lungs hold roughly 56-57 liters of air, which is roughly 55 gallon buckets of air. Compared to human lungs that hold 7-8 liters. Horse lungs are roughly ⅓ of the horse's body. Dust Causes damage and irritations to the respiratory system. When horses are being exercised they can inhale up to 600 gallons of air per minute. Horses live in environments full of dust such as stalls, arenas, dry lots and barns. When dust enters the airway, it can cause mucus to build up in the lungs and make it difficult to breathe, therefore reducing oxygen intake. How would you like to run around an arena being short of breath?!

Let's get a session scheduled to minimize the risk of respiratory complications!!
