When we sit in silence, to cultivate the mind, the heart and the spirit; The possible question may be what we should do? Do you have to do something? What is the right Attitude towards that practice, considered today's meditation?
Here are two large lines within the Buddhist and Taoist tradition. We distinguish full attention/Mindfulness which will have to do with taking attention to a point of concentration, without judging it or changing the nature of what is manifested. For example breathing.
On the other hand, we recognize the practice in which we simply "do nothing", we simply sit still in silence and let the nature of our being manifest. In Zen, this way is recognized as Patriarch Zen and essentially is what we do in the traditional Zazen.
I consider that it is interesting to put into practice both personal cultivation alternatives. For those who recently begin, I recommend starting with mindfulness practice.
