Since I already have some followers and even a product review (Thanks!), I feel like I owe you to finally put some content on my page. 😉 I will start by introducing my initial project: a special cover which I created for my Dexcom G6 earlier this year - shortly after I switched from the FreeStyle Libre to the G6. The patch of my G6 usually started to peel off after a couple of days and I recently discovered my passion for 3D printing ... so I put two and two together.
On the one hand my cover simply protects the sensor and reduces the risk of pulling off the entire sensor when getting caught somewhere. On the other hand it also covers the entire original patch and holds it onto the skin! Thus the patch won't peel off that easily. Also, the additional patch (for the cover) can thus be replaced at any time, without further detaching / stressing the original patch. So even if you have to replace patches a lot, you should be able to wear the sensor quite a while. It seems that resolving this patch issue is the even more valueable benefit for most of its users. For me both aspects work more than sufficient and I hope the cover is able to help others as well.
Initially I released the 3D design files on thingiverse.com - a platform for free 3D models. Anyone with access to a 3D printer is able to print their own covers for free (for private use). For that purpose I created two versions with slightly different geometries. One for the standard 3D printing material (PLA) and one for a flexible and thus way mor comfortable 3D printing material (TPU). Additionally, I created a printable patch template for cutting your own patches which would exactly fit around the cover.
After receiving a lot of positive feedback regarding my idea, I also had to notice that most people (of course) don't have access to a 3D printer and thus were unable to actually benefit from my release on thingiverse. Since I am working as a freelance architect I was able to dedicate more time into that project and spontaneously opened a shop on etsy, where I now offer prints of my design.
Thanks to all my customers so far, I am currently able to further improve my design and to develop similar covers for the G5, FreeStyleLibre and the OmniPod. And I am happy to be able to do that. 🙂
