The cosmetics, skincare and beauty industry is largely dominated by products tested on animals, harmful ingredients and ecologically-destructive manufacturing processes and packaging.
Within the world of cosmetics it is extremely difficult to define what is natural and organic as these products do not have to be officially certified before landing on our shop shelves. Therefore, manipulative marketing campaigns can exploit conscious consumer ‘buzzwords’ such as, ‘natural’, ‘clean’, ‘green’ or ‘fresh’, when in fact they may be full of nasties, owned by companies that test on animals and encourage unsustainable sourcing which continues to destroy eco-systems, habitats and our mother nature. Companies can get away with this time and time again until their products may, or may not be, properly investigated.
The further I fell down the rabbit hole the more I was shocked by what I discovered and found I was feeling more and more betrayed as a consumer. Even brands that I thought were cruelty-free, natural and trustworthy are in fact owned by companies that are not, so we actually end up funding the very experiments that harm animals and our environment in such an inhumane way.
The outcome of my research was becoming clear that many major beauty brands continue to quietly endorse animal testing and unsustainable manufacturing processes by producing creative and skilful marketing messages that lead consumers to think they are making an ethical choice, when in fact, they are not. The nasty side of beauty had well and truly reared its ugly head.
