27/02/2026
The date is the Fruit of the Year 2026.
The winning fruit for the next twelve months as the Fruit of the Year 2026 is the date. The selection is part of the annual International Fruit Day. Trainees in the domestic science program at the SOS Children's Village Berlin randomly selected ten fruits from hundreds of varieties, which were then put to a public vote. Voting took place via social media and at the international trade fairs FRUIT LOGISTICA and Biofach, where exhibitors and industry professionals cast their ballots.
With 30% of the votes, the date clearly secured first place. The following fruits follow in the rankings:
• Olive (20.5%)
• Blackcurrant (9.5%)
• Pitahaya (8%)
• Shaddock and cranberry (7% each)
• Prickly pear and star fruit (5.5% each)
• Lulo (4%)
• Granadilla (3%)
Dates are the sweet fruits of the date palm, which thrives primarily in dry regions around the southern Mediterranean. They are considered nutrient-rich energy sources: high in fiber, vitamins, and natural sugars. Enjoyed fresh or dried, they have a wide variety of uses – whether in fruit bars, as a natural sweetener in dishes, or as a traditional accompaniment to breaking the fast during Ramadan.
Their aromatic-sweet flavor and their cultural and historical significance have made the date a special fruit in gastronomy and tradition for millennia.
International Fruit Day will be celebrated for the twentieth time this year on July 1, 2026. International Fruit Day was first launched in 2007 by students in Berlin to celebrate the diversity and joy of sharing fruit. Today, it is celebrated in over 50 countries.
The goal is to promote fruit consumption and raise awareness of its health benefits. Events, awareness campaigns, and community activities take place worldwide – from picnics to workshops and tastings. The day offers a fruitful opportunity to discover different types of fruit, their origins, and their uses in meals, smoothies, baked goods, and snacks.
The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of Women in Agriculture. Building on this, the twentieth International Fruit Day is themed:
"Plant, learn, celebrate."
This is a call to highlight engagement and education in fruit growing, nutrition, and community learning.
