GERMANY: HOLISTIC REINTEGRATION WITH IMPACT
How ARRIVES Supports Returnees in Building New Futures in Nigeria
__________
Coming back to Nigeria after years abroad is never a simple decision. For some, it follows many years of life in Germany. For others, it comes after receiving a decision on an asylum claim, where staying is no longer possible. Whatever the reason, return can feel uncertain and overwhelming. This is where trusted support makes all the difference.

What Is ARRIVES?
Assisting the Reintegration of Returnees through Integrated Vocational and Entrepreneurship Support (ARRIVES) is designed to help Nigerians who choose voluntary return from Germany. Co-implemented by Social Impact, IRARA and the International Trade Centre (ITC), the project is funded by the European Commission’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

There are two approaches to economic reintegration: self-employment or job placement. ARRIVES provides individualized coaching, business development support, psychosocial support and access to reintegration funding for returnees from Europe. Services are available before departure and after arrival, helping individuals plan realistically and build sustainable livelihoods. The programme offers holistic guidance before and after return, prioritizing dignity, opportunity, and long-term stability.

Across Nigeria, ARRIVES participants are transforming their lives — gaining skills for employment or starting small businesses in fields like farming, retail, solar energy and beauty services. What Kind of Support Is Offered?
Each person’s path is unique and ARRIVES walks alongside participants to explore their goals and provide tailored support. Before departure, counsellors help returnees plan realistically for life back in Nigeria and are available throughout the entire process – from their initial business idea right through to the launch and establishment of their business in Nigeria or entering employment. This can include the following: pre-departure guidance to explore options and prepare for return; one-on-one coaching tailored to local market conditions; business start-up support through the European Reintegration Programme; and access to vocational training, housing, and psychosocial services.

Support is confidential, non-binding, and adapted to each person’s goals whether it’s launching a business or starting a new career.
A Real-Life Example: Dominic’s Journey
Dominic, for example, spent ten years in Germany and then came home to raise pigs. With ARRIVES’ coaching and support, he launched a pig farm in Edo State and has created jobs for others.
“Even before I left Germany, ARRIVES was already guiding me,” Dominic says. “The business coaching helped me understand the Nigerian market, test ideas, and plan realistically.” Stories like Dominic’s show how structured support can turn return into a new beginning.

Across Germany, more than 700 return counselling centres are available to provide this support. Participation in counselling is entirely voluntary and has no impact on asylum procedures or residence status.

CHALLENGES FACING NIGERIAN COMMUNITY IN GERMANY AND HOW TO ADDRESS THEM

A rare opportunity for Nigerians in Germany to speak directly with their diplomats took place in Frankfurt on 1 August 2025. The town hall meeting, part of the Consulate’s Consular and Migration Sensitisation Programme, addressed urgent community concerns — from passport delays to legal challenges and child welfare cases.
In this exclusive interview with The African Courier, Chuks Lewis Ehiwario, President of Concerned Nigerians Germany e.V. and keynote speaker at the meeting, reflects on the event’s significance, the challenges confronting Nigerians, the responsibilities of individuals, and how associations can better advance community interests.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Germany e.V. successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 14 June 2025, in Berlin, with members attending both in person and virtually from across Germany.

The AGM marked the end of the two-year term of the Executive Committee led by Dr Moses Kolade Ogun as well as the Board of Trustees and it featured the election of a new leadership team to steer the organisation forward.

In his address, Dr Ogun reflected on a challenging tenure marked by internal disputes, including legal challenges to the legitimacy of the 2023 election. However, two separate court rulings upheld the election of the Ogun-led executive. Dr Ogun thanked members for their resilience and reiterated the organisation’s renewed commitment to advancing the interests of Nigerians in Germany and contributing to national development in Nigeria.

Despite the crisis, the outgoing Executive Committee recorded several milestones. These include:
➤ Hosting a successful hybrid networking conference for Nigerian professionals, which took place in Berlin in 2024, among several events.
➤ Launching a pioneering IT project, led by members to provide Nigerian university campuses with free internet access using open-source technologies that has now been adopted by NIDO Europe as a flagship initiative.
➤ Amending the organisation’s constitution to comply fully with non-profit regulations. The Berlin tax authorities are currently reviewing the new statute for final approval of NIDO Germany’s non-profit status.
➤Holding a successful AGM

The AGM addressed past internal conflicts and took decisive disciplinary action, barring four individuals involved in an illegal “caretaker committee” from the organisation for four years.

The measure, according to the Board of Trustees (BoT), was necessary to uphold the constitution and preserve organisational integrity.

Continental Recognition and Support

In a show of solidarity, Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), addressed the meeting via Zoom, congratulating NIDO Germany and reaffirming NiDCOM’s willingness to collaborate on future initiatives.

Hon. Harold Ogunfemi, Chairman of NIDO Europe (NIDOE), also participated virtually and praised NIDO Germany’s leadership and contribution to the continental body, citing the IT project spearheaded by Dr Adeyemi and Engr Oladunjoye as “a flagship initiative of NIDOE.” He encouraged members to actively participate in the upcoming Diaspora Week in July and NIDOE’s AGM in November in Warsaw, Poland.
