This year marks the fifth annual Black Maternal Health Week -- held from April 11-17, 2022. 🎉 In order to uplift Black women and their families, we at EBM are joining forces with to center Black women’s scholarship, maternity care work, and advocacy across the full-spectrum of sexual, maternal, and reproductive health care, services, programs, and initiatives.

Let's think: How are we doing this in Germany, in our cities, and in our communities? What can we learn from the US conversation and adapt to the European context? 🤔

The theme of centering black families, midwives, and systems of care reflects the critical need for learning about Black Feminist and womanist approaches in strengthening wellness structures within communities and across the Diaspora as a revolutionary act in the pursuit of liberation, and in the global fight to END maternal mortality and maternal health inequities.

Representation matters. All parents deserve to see images like this that represent their bodies and their families.

So WHY is this the first time many people are ever seeing a black fetus illustrated?? When the beauty of life in utero is universal, only representing it with white bodies is discriminatory and dangerous.

Diversity in medical illustration is a critical step in decolonizing the academic medical curriculum and reflecting the population it is meant to serve. Eurocentric medicine is harmful.
