Peptic Ulcers: What You Need to Know! 📚
Ever felt a burning ache in your upper belly? It could be more than just “indigestion.” Let’s break it down in simple terms—swipe-worthy and easy to understand!
1. What is an Ulcer?
A sore or crater in the lining of your stomach or the first part of your small intestine (duodenum).
2. How Common Is It in East Africa?
About 15% of people have peptic ulcer disease—meaning roughly 1 in every 7 individuals is affected.
That’s a significant number!

3. Main Causes:
• Bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) – a stomach bug that weakens your gut’s protection.
• Painkillers (like ibuprofen or aspirin) – especially when used often.
• Lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol use, stress.
• Also, rare causes like hormonal issues or extremely high acid levels.
4. Symptoms:
• Burning or gnawing pain in your upper belly.
• Pain that improves with eating (duodenal ulcer) or worsens after meals (stomach ulcer).
• Warning signs: vomiting blood or black stools—these are emergencies!
5. Treatment:
• For bacterial ulcers: A combo of antibiotics + acid-blocking medications (PPIs).
• If caused by medicine: Stop or reduce painkillers (when possible), and use PPIs.
• Bleeding ulcers may need treatment during endoscopy; surgery is rare.
