Tomi vs. Cancer

Tomi vs. Cancer Page made for everyone who wants to follow my (Tomislav Ručević) battle with brain cancer. I will post news and updates, along with general information :)

Dear visitor, my name is Tomislav Ručević. I am a 23-year-old psychology student from Osijek, Croatia. Last year in June I have been diagnosed with a stage 3 brain tumour, which has since progressed to a stage 4 tumour called Glioblastoma Multiforme. I have had two surgeries and received chemo- and radiotherapy after the first surgery. I am currently looking for other treatment options abroad. This page was created so that people who would like to help, either with information, kind wishes or donations, can do so; you can also follow my story and progress in the battle against cancer, as well as short anecdotes from daily life :)

Heyo boyz and gurlz! ;) Sorry for not updating the page in (what I just realized is) over a year and rarely responding to some of your messages... but I have some awesome news, so I hope you can forgive me! :D First of all, my health is still great, so you can relax :D To keep it short, I am still taking chemo every 2 weeks, taking it pretty well every time - only some fatigue on the day of the chemo...the next day I'm as good as new :) ..and the control MRI's have also been clean for a bit more than 2 and a half years, so a big yaay for that as well :P
The other big part of the update - I'm finally done with my studies! 😊 Masters in Psychology - check! xD ...and I seriously couldn't be more thrilled and grateful for that - and of course seeing my mom's radiant smile is the best thing ever 💓 Also can't wait to start putting this degree to good use! :)
Until next time,

Tomi :)

Heyo guys, time for another (rare) update :) just got home from the control MRI and, since I have an awesome radiologist, he tells me the results as soon as I get out of the room :) Long story short, the tumour hasn't grown/progressed at all, nothing has changed since the last MRI and I seriously couldn't be happier! :) I'm always stressed like hell a week before the MRI is scheduled (obvious pressure), so this really feels like a mountain off my chest...gonna eat my chicken tortilla now and finally relax (and so can u) :D

Love you all,

Tomi

Ho ho ho, guys! :) Time for another brief update...as always, sorry for not doing these more frequently and making up excuses, but the past couple of weeks I really haven't been feeling well, since my immune system is terrible (that's what 8 months of chemo does to it, unfortunately), but it's getting better :) I'm still taking Avastin every 2 weeks (or 3, if travelling :D ) and CCNU every 6 weeks, still taking it very well, with only minor side effects :) This next one will be the first one of the third (and probably) final cycle, since I have to start decreasing the dose (as you remember dr. Wick said :) ). Finally, a couple of days ago I had my control MRI, which showed that the tumour hasn't progressed at all, which would be THE best Christmas present, right? :D Hope you're all having a wonderful time for the holidays, and have a great new year! :)

Till next time,

Tomi

Dear friends, family, followers and other f-words I can't think of at the moment ( :D ) long time no see (or hear)! So I conveniently decided it was time for another update :)
First of all, I know that for the past couple of months I've been somewhat neglecting the page and I would like to apologize for that. I know that a lot of you have been worried and I'd just like to assure you that I'm not just okay, but have had one of the best summers ever! A lot of travelling, sun, sea and backpacking through (quite literally) half of Europe :D Karla and I have spent an amazing day in Venice, Torino, a couple of awesome days in Lyon, the most beautiful week in Taize, then went on (for 10+ days) to Bordeaux, Lourdes, and, finally, Montpellier, before coming back home. It really has been one of the most interesting and action-filled backpacking trips evaar :D
As for the therapy part, I am still on Avastin (every 2 weeks) and CCNU (every 6 weeks) therapy, and, as dr. Wick suggested, will continue taking it till the end of the year, because, well... it's working and I'm grateful as hell for it! :) However, a few days after the last CCNU cycle (10 days ago), something weird started happening. One day, when I woke up, I started feeling dizzy and lightheaded, which freaked me out, because it never used to happen as intensely and frequently as this. Wherever (and whenever) I looked, I would just feel woozy, accompanied by a weird anxious feeling of...looking from the 20th floor balcony. Aaaanyway, after 4-5 days of that non-stop damn condition, I ended up in an ER yesterday and spent a bit over 5 hours in the hospital. After blood work, BP, urine, reflex and coordination tests, and many more, I got sent to an MRI. (Then, after 3 times the doctor tried to calibrate it and it didn't work, we had to go to the other MRI machine, where I had to walk in my boxers and a small green dress they give you to wear, showing my pretty little behind to half of the department! :D )
Anyway, after all of that, the results showed that *badum tss* the tumour has NOT progressed at all, hasn't grown at all, which is the most amazing news I've received since...well, the last MRI result :D
Hopefully, I'm gonna keep receiving such amazing news every time!
The whole dizziness thing has been ascribed to the side-effects of CCNU, so it's hopefully gonna pass soon (I'm already feeling better :) ).

Thanks for bearing with me, till next time,

Tomi :)

The day has finally arrived!
Yesterday morning I went to see dr. Wolfgang Wick in Heidelberg, Germany. He is one of the leading experts in the field of GBM and is doing a ton of research on new methods in GBM treatment, including viral therapy, different kinds of immunotherapy, as well as making progress in check-point inhibitors approach to treatment. Anyways, we discussed the different approaches and the current state of the art in GBM treatment and he gave his proposal about what, and how, should be done next. Long story short, he proposed that I continue taking the Bev + CCNU therapy, since it's obviously working for the moment. I should be taking it for another 5-6 months, which is actually pretty convenient, since I'm taking the therapy pretty well and am not experiencing any serious side-effects. Then, around the end of 2016., we should see how my situation is and whether there's a need to start another treatment. He said that Bevacizumab should keep things under control at least until the end of the year, if not even longer and then...well, who knows? The clinical trials currently going on are showing promising results and the new methods are developing very quickly. By the end of the year some of the experimental methods might already be available for the off-trial use, some of the preclinical trials might already start being tested on humans...the possibilities are endless!

I feel very happy and, to be honest, finally relaxed. Now that I have a contact with a doctor who is a true expert and, above everything, willing to help and recommend me the right trials when the time comes, now I can finally sit back for a bit. I will enjoy the rest of the summer celebrating the good news and probably enroll to the last year of my studies in September :)

Also, I'd like to send hugs to Jelena, who I met through this page so we had a drink and a short city tour of Heidelberg, Kamila who joined us for the tour and lunch and Nathan who has been the best host ever! It was awesome seeing/meeting you guys, and I hope we'll meet again soon :)

Next stop: Munich! Till the next time,
Tomi

Heyo guys, time for another update! :)
Since my last chemo almost 2 weeks ago, I haven't been feeling really well. I was nauseous for 5 days after I got the chemo and lost my apetite and so on...BUT I've got some awesome news :D Last Thursday I had a control MRI and the results show that the tumour hasn't grown AT ALL since the last MRI, which means this chemo is actually working and I really couldn't be more grateful for that!
Also, I have got LOTS of plans for this summer, the first of which starts in a week - I'll keep you updated! Thank you for all the good wishes and prayers, it means a lot!

I adio problemi!

Update time! :D
So, yesterday morning I've received my third dose of chemo and, as always, I took it really well :) I've been approved for 8 cycles, which means I have an MRI scan scheduled in 2 or 3 weeks, so keep your fingers crossed! :)
After that I went home and made the best tortillas in the world (according to my mom *khm* Karla has yet to confirm that claim *khm* :D ), after which I fell on my bed like a log and slept through the whole afternoon xD In the evening we went for a small EFPSA reunion with Tajana and Mirna, whose beautiful faces you can see in the photo below :D
Today, I finally went for a bike trip around the city, some 17km (I've had/still have a cold I can't seem to get rid of, so I wasn't really going out that much >.< ) and it just felt amazing! New goal - do this route every day! Achievable? We'll see ;)
Briefly on the plans for further treatment: First of all, I'd like to thank EVERY SINGLE kind soul, all of you awesome people, for being this helpful and putting so much effort into this! :) I'm still receiving so many messages and e-mails with truly helpful information, so once again - thank you! :) So far, one of the options I've chosen is Heidelberg, Germany. I've managed to schedule a meeting with dr. Wick, one of the leading scientists in biomolecular/genetic approaches to GBM, for which I have to thank my wonderful friend Elena , who tracked him down during the Brain tumour Infoday in Berlin and introduced him to my case. I will visit Heidelberg in July and discuss experimental treatment options, so I'm already planning out the plan B/C/D if this one doesn't work. All in all, being very positive about it! :)

Till next time,

Tomi :)
