Breathing Bones and the Intelligence of Pranayama
Your breath is not only happening in your lungs.
Your ribs, sternum and spine move with every breath.
As you inhale, the diaphragm descends, the rib cage widens, the sternum lifts gently and the spine lengthens.
As you exhale, everything softens and settles back.
These subtle movements send signals of safety to your nervous system.
When the ribs or spine become stiff, breathing often becomes shallow.
When your bones are free to move, the breath feels more spacious and grounded.
This is why pranayama is not about controlling the breath.
It is about awareness, softness and allowing the whole body to participate.
This embodied understanding of breath is a core part of how we teach pranayama.
