Is dried fruit healthy? 🍎 🍇🍍

Dried fruit is a whole food, packed with nutrients and fiber. However, dried fruit contains much more sugar than fresh fruit and is higher on the glycemic index, meaning you may experience a blood sugar spike and crash after too much! 🥱 Also something to watch out for, many dried fruits contain extra added sugar, oils and additives to make them soft, so check the label.

Because of these factors, my preference is always fresh, whole fruit! Whole fruit is also more hydrating because it still contains all of that water. 🥥🥝🍓🫐

But if you’re going with dried, just look out for additives and watch portion size. 🤓

Upgrade your oatmeal for more energy 💥

Eating the standard store-bought flavored oatmeal packets gives you a one way ticket on the blood sugar roller coaster for the day 🎢 Most flavored oatmeals are loaded with sugar, often 12g of added sugar per serving and don’t have the fiber, protein and healthy fats to keep your blood sugar stable and help you feel focused and satiated without those mid-morning cravings for a pick-me-up.

So what’s the solution? Make your own! It’s just as easy to make your own oats from scratch at home, and you can add in some superfood goodness like chia seeds or flax seeds, whole fruit and stir in a protein source like collagen or a plant-based protein. 🥣

With my clients who want to make changes to their diet to have more energy throughout the day, breakfast is the first thing we look at! Starting the day with a balanced breakfast sets you up for smooth energy and focus all day long. 🤓

If you want to learn more, we discuss all of this in the 7 Day Sugar Reset program. The link is in my bio 🌈 or send me a DM and let’s chat about what you are struggling with!

Health is a daily practice, not a 30 day crash diet 🌈🦋🌱

Today I was poking around on Pinterest trends to see what people are searching for. I hadn’t used this tool before so I started typing in different terms to see what came up, and I was really surprised at what I saw (swipe to see). I searched for some basic terms like yoga, and wellness and healthy recipes and saw a huge spike for the first week of January. 📈

Should I have been surprised? I think so often we are looking for a new beginning to embark on a new lifestyle. I know I’ve been caught in this trap. I’ll start on Monday, or the 1st of the month, or after my birthday, or next year. Our mind plays tricks on us, but we don’t need a new week or a new month to commit to small, sustainable lifestyle changes. We can actually start right now, in this moment. 😌

Often, when something monumental begins like a new year, we think we have to start with massive, radical change. We excitedly search Pinterest for healthy meal prep and workout routines and make it a few weeks before falling back into our old routines. Next year, we tell ourselves. But I’m telling you, you don’t have to wait until January 1st, 2023 to start making consistent changes and seeing results. All you have to do is commit and have an action plan focusing on small, sustainable changes. 🤓

Making health a daily practice can be easy. I have some 1:1 spots still open for next month if you’re feeling called. Send me a DM and we can chat about what you are struggling with 💌

Is it time for a sugar reset? 🤔

It’s not normal to feel tired all the time. It’s not normal to be constantly reaching for sugar and carbs to make it through the day. Headaches and mood swings are not the norm. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, chances are sugar is the sneaky culprit. 😯

And maybe you think, well I don’t eat a lot or sugar! I hear this all the time, but if you eat processed foods, you’re probably eating way more sugar than you think. 😬

You see, we expect to find sugar in foods like cookies, donuts, candies, soda and ice cream. 🍦🍩🍫🍪🧁

We don’t expect it to be hiding in foods crackers, hummus, rice cakes and frozen dinners. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But added sugar is literally added to everything these days and it adds up quick! 🥯🥫🍕🥪

Ready to cut down on added sugar in your diet and say goodbye to cravings, headaches, fatigue and mood swings? The 7 Day Sugar Reset might be perfect for you. Here’s what people are saying about the program:
💥
“Sugar and sugary snacks have been my turn-to junk food for years. This program showed me that I can be more conscious about my food choices and enabled me to remain on a much lower sugar-intake ever since.”
💥
“This clear and easy-to-follow programme demystified hidden sugars and gave me real insight into what I was consuming.”
💥
“I was shocked to learn how much sugar there is in everyday food. As a result of this I am looking out for the hidden sugars and reducing my intake.”

Rethink your breakfast! 💡

There’s no such thing as breakfast food. Whaaat?! Did I just say that? 🙊 but it’s true! There’s just, food.

The standard American diet has popularized non-nutritious foods that make us feel sluggish, tired and bloated, and typical “breakfast” foods are at the top of the list. Standard breakfast fare such as bagels, pastries and cereal provide little to no nutritious value and many breakfast items are loaded with sugar. 🍩🥞🥯🥐

When I studied abroad in China in 2011, I was forced to reconsider what I ate for breakfast. At the buffet in the mornings, i was to choose between noodle dishes, savory pancakes, porridges and wonton soup! I confess I mostly survived off of hard boiled eggs cooked in tea with a side of noodles 😅

We’ve been programmed to think that breakfast has to be sweet! But unfortunately, a sweet, unbalanced breakfast will just give us a fast track ticket to the blood sugar roller coaster, our energy peaking and crashing throughout the day 🎢

Try out a savory breakfast balanced with protein, healthy fats and fiber and see how you feel! The recipe for these breakfast tacos is in the 7 Day Sugar Reset. The program includes a recipe book full of meals that will keep you energized and satisfied all day long. 🌮🥚

Watch out for these sneaky added sugar offenders! 🚨

You might think that you’re not eating a lot of added sugar, but if you eat processed foods, it’s probably more than you think. 🥫🌭🍞🥓🍔 Sugar is commonly added to foods like sauces and condiments, deli meat, canned soups, breads and nut butters.

Sugar can be hiding in your food under a whole host of sneaky names. We recognize words like “sugar” “high fructose corn syrup” “honey” and “maple syrup”. But what about “dehydrated cane juice” “fruit juice concentrate” “dextran” “treacle” and “Florida crystals”? Unfortunately, most people wouldn’t recognize those words as sugar when reading a food label, and that’s exactly what food manufacturers want! 😤

Sugar over-consumption is a huge issue these days, and sugar related diseases, like heart disease, diabetes and dementia, are skyrocketing. But added sugar consumption can have more subtle effects as well such as brain fog, fatigue, inflammation, headaches and mood swings. 🥱

Now I don’t want to demonize sugar. My goal is to increase your awareness so that when you are eating products that contain sugar, you’re making a conscious, informed choice. 🤓

Is this what they mean when they say eat the rainbow? 😋

In all serious though, what we eat makes a huge impact on our health and eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is an easy way to get the complete range of the vitamins and minerals your body needs for optimal health. Eating a diverse range of foods is also a good way to improve your gut microbiome and experience healthy digestion. 🌈

🍓🍅🌶 removes damaging free radicals and reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke

🍑🥕🍊 protects your skin, promotes healthy joints, and promotes eye health

🍋🍍🌽 helps your immune system, fortifies skin elasticity, good for heart

🥬🥒🥦 detoxifies the body, promotes healthy bones and teeth, aids in tissue healing, provides digestive enzymes

🫐🍆🍇 boosts memory, fights inflammation, protects against cell damage

So make it a habit to switch up your plant foods (you can follow what’s in season!) to get the benefits of all of these vitamins and minerals essential for optimum health.

✨Plant foods are magic! The variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables have enormous healing powers. ✨

P.S. This veggie burger is from here in Milan, and they dye their colorful buns with plants! This purple color is from purple carrot extract.

Nutrition can be easy 🤓

Rereading .pollen Food Rules today, a book 12 years old and more relevant than ever as we’re navigating a world of conflicting studies, opposing diets and increasing “edible foodlike substances” filling our supermarket shelves.

I hear from my clients that they are often confused about what on earth they are supposed to be eating. We’re living in a hyper connected world and we’re constantly bombarded with the latest diet craze. One day eggs are good for you, and the next day they’re off the menu. Yesterday everyone was swearing by low-fat Atkins but today high-fat Keto is all the rage. Just because one person is thriving in a gluten-free or paleo lifestyle doesn’t mean it will work for everyone.

So what do you do? Simply focus on eating real, whole foods most of the time. And how do you do that?

My tips to make eating healthy go from complicated to easy-peasy

1. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label, or you can’t imagine them growing in nature, don’t eat it 🍫
2. Even better, buy foods that don’t even have a label 🥕
3. Shop at the local farmers market or subscribe to a CSA (community supported agriculture) 🥒🥑🫐🍎
4. Say no to high fructose corn syrup and excessive added sugar 🙅🏼‍♀️
5. Avoid inflammatory vegetable oils (corn, canola, grapeseed, soybean, safflower, etc.) when possible (esp when cooking and eating at home!) 🌽
6. Buy the freshest, most local produce you can find 🍋

Of course there are exceptions, and I don’t believe we should be crazy about food labels all of the time. But most of the time? Yes. 🍒

What do you think? Does eating healthy have to be complicated or can it be easy?

Food is so much more than fuel, or energy, or calories 🤓

Food is information, supplying our bodies with instructions to regulate how our bodies function. We know that food has macronutrients (protein, carbs and fat) but food also contains micronutrients, phytochemicals and so much more. And these factors influence our energy, our mood, our performance and long-term health. 🥬🥝🍠🥑🫐

That’s why it’s so important to focus on nutrient density, quality and optimal foods for our unique bodies. When we eat in this way, we experience unstoppable energy, increased performance and vitality. ⚡️

Looking for a place to get started? I’ve created a recipe book in the 7 Day Sugar Reset with meals that will keep you energized and satisfied all day long. It includes the recipe for these sesame ginger soba noodles!

Have you had these noodles before? Soba noodles are a Japanese noodle made from buckwheat! And buckwheat is actually a seed, not a grain. It also ranks low on the glycemic scale, which means this dish won’t send your blood sugar soaring! Buckwheat also contains more vitamins and minerals than your typical grains, is high in fiber and protein and has been studied to lower inflammation 🙋🏼‍♀️
